U.S. grain exports to the Soviet Union spark price fears as domestic supplies rise and stockpiles shrink. Meany suspends a one month boycott, Ford extends a moratorium to mid October while aiming for a long term deal.
AFL CIO President George Meany and six maritime union leaders suspend the boycott of corn and wheat shipments to the Soviet Union for 30 days after meeting with President Ford. Ford pledges a six point plan to reduce consumer price impact and to route more grain via U S ships with American crews. A Moscow negotiating team will seek to spread future Russian grain purchases.
Julie Carden a 21 year old Kansas University senior died after a one car crash in Olathe that also killed Vicki Yount 20. The two sorority sisters and two men were en route to an Alpha Gamma Delta pledge party when the collision occurred. Police continue to investigate with no charges filed. Funeral services for Carden will be held Friday at a Kansas City Kansas funeral home with burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.

Rep. Charles Vanik cites IRS figures showing 24 millionaires paid no federal income tax in 1973 74 and 15 oil firms paid far more abroad than to the U S, while farm tax shelters may be ended to boost next year’s revenue.
Lawrence District 497 teachers receive base pay raises from 7650 to 7800 dollars effective immediately as 91 992 dollars budgeted for salaries is allocated to the teacher pay scale. The plan, praised by LEA president Betty Kessler, followed a budgeted surplus from lower hiring costs and a negotiated compromise that added a pay step.
Lawrence City Commission will move ahead with Commissioner Carl Mibeck’s housing code proposal and may face a federal suit from Daniel S. Ling over demolition of his property at 1201 Ohio. Demolition orders were issued after a two week deadline, with Ling alleging due process denial.
Lawrence residents led by Heather Reis accuse 1922 pipes of rusting water when hydrants are used. The commission considers replacing 2000 feet of pipe at about 25 000 and restricting hydrant use to emergencies while utilities staff proposes a cleaning product. Reis previously received about 35 dollars for laundry damage.
