Adolf Hitler spoke in a Berlin radio broadcast recorded by the Associated Press railing at an “absence of will” among Italian elements as the cause of Mussolini’s capitulation. He said Italy was bound by treaty but delayed entry, noting Mussolini’s push for more war powers led to his downfall.
Moscow announced in a special order that Soviet troops seized Mariupol and Barvenkovo along with Volnovakha and Chaplino near the Sea of Azov. The Red Army advanced on a 100 mile front from Bakhmach to Zenkov, approaching Kiev, with Bakhmach’s capture cited as splitting German defenses.

German announced Rome capitulated to a German assault and that Nazi troops would protect Vatican City. Field Marshal Albert von Kesselring led the attack while Erwin Rommel was placed in command of northern Italy troops. Rome’s radio reportedly fell under German control and Calvi de Bergolo named Rome garrison commander. Spezia naval base also said to be in German hands.

York a 19 year old KU engineering junior from Spring Hill Kan suffered two upper arm breaks and bruises when his bicycle collided with the car of W L Newlin Route 4 near Eleventh and Missouri streets He was taken to KU student hospital for treatment and is reported making satisfactory progress York was en route to work at WREN radio station where he is a part time control room operator

Washington UP reports the War Department released a casualty list naming four Kansas men among 208 U S soldiers killed in action. Among the Kansas group are Second Lieut James H Dodderidge of Lawrence and Pvt Robert J Fillmore of Cottonwood Falls, with relatives listed as next of kin.
Mrs Otto Hunzicker of 2045 Vermont Street suffered a severe fracture of her upper right arm in a fall down basement stairs at her home this morning. She was taken to Memorial Hospital where her condition this afternoon was reported satisfactory though she remained in considerable pain.
