Immigration labor debate looms over farm bill at Kansas fair
Kansas farmers at the state fair heard House Agriculture Chair Collin Peterson warn that a looming farm labor shortage due to tighter immigration enforcement could push fruit and vegetable prices higher. Peterson said the committee will press immigration issues in the farm bill and may hold hearings with judiciary leaders. He urged a realistic guest worker program to prevent harvest shortfalls and rising food costs, noting politics and broader reform affect momentum. Senator Sam Brownback, a Republican presidential hopeful, called immigration reform the toughest issue in Congress.
