Activist pastor chosen to lead National Baptist Convention
The Rev. Henry J. Lyons, longtime political activist and Bethel Metropolitan Baptist Church pastor in St. Petersburg, was elected president of the National Baptist Convention U.S.A., Inc. for a five year term. Lyons led Democratic campaigns in Florida and vowed to expand political and economic power for Black communities amid pressures over AIDS, violence, poverty, and family dissolution. Lyons won 3,545 votes, defeating Rev. W. Franklyn Richardson and others, succeeding Rev. T.J. Jemison.

Pilot in Iraq shootdown face homicide charges
Air Force says Lt. Col. Randy W. May ignored a fellow pilot’s warning to confirm the helicopters’ identity before firing at two Army Black Hawks during the April 14 incident in Iraq. Four finalists named for Lawrence planning director post
Interviews wrapped in Lawrence for a planning director to lead five planners with a 464000 dollar budget next year. Finalists Wildgen Finger Jones Balkas and Miller were narrowed from 102 applicants. an extensive background check is planned within a week. The winner will tackle Horizon 2020, fringe-area development, and rising residential demand as city services strain. Finger has served as acting director since June and has 16 years in the office. Jones oversees site and development plans for Fen ton Western in California and stresses controlled growth. Balkas recently left Binghamton as director and interviewed in Lawrence. Miller is a Fort Myers consultant unavailable for comment.
