High winds and drought sparked two major grass fires in the Law Fence area. Fire Chief John Miller urged burning off fields and stubble only under strict control as winds remain strong through Saturday. The first blaze arose near a smoldering cottonwood at West Twenty-Third Street, burning almost 40 acres and threatening a barn but causing no structural damage. The second fire occurred southeast of Lawrence near County Poor Farm. Fire crews responded twice, aided by the County Highway Department water truck refills, with rural runs already up for the year.
