Reagan poised to enter 76 GOP race before Thanksgiving

Sen. Paul Laxalt said Ronald Reagan will enter the 1976 GOP presidential contest before Thanksgiving and mount a strong primary challenge to President Ford. He stressed there will be no conservative third party and that Reagan would back Ford if he does not win the nomination, aiming to build early primary momentum.

Coed Stabbing Report Near U S 59 In Lawrence

Police investigate a stabbing of Washburn University coed Priscilla Garber 20 riding a bicycle along U S 59 at 6 30 a m. She described a Black man in his mid 20s 5 ft 10 in 160 lb emerging from bushes, pushing her down and slashing her left side with a four inch blade before fleeing. She was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Ford may visit KU during Higher Education Week

Ford might come to the University of Kansas as part of Higher Education Week though officials deem the chance remote. A White House spokesman denied link to a Kansas City fundraiser where Ford is to attend, while Chancellor Archie Dykes was unavailable for comment and inquiries about an invitation were being made.

Minor injuries in two weekend Lawrence crashes

Two minor injury accidents were reported by Lawrence police. At Sixth and Colorado a car driven by 16 year old Timothy L. Windholz crashed into a light pole, injuring Windholz and two passengers. About two hours later Alan W. Jack 18 was injured after a rollover at Fourth and Walnut and was cited for driving while intoxicated.

Kalb named new Kansas Secretary of Revenue in shift

F Kent Kalb, 36, chosen by Gov Bennett to head the Kansas Revenue Department, will take over Sept 17 and replace James McDonald. Kalb says tax hikes are not needed unless the legislature funds new programs, cites prior success in Nebraska, and plans to live in Lawrence with his wife and son while keeping focus on tax policy.

Tax auction set for 71 tracts of delinquent land

A 1:30 p m sale on the Douglas County Courthouse steps will offer 71 tracts in two groups 63 and eight under a July order by District Court Judge Frank Gray. Sheriff Rex Johnson leads the auction with two owners having already redeemed. Proceeds go to back taxes with any overrun recoverable by the original owners through the court per Daniel Young.
