Road Design Completed for U.S. 59 South of City

Plans for U S 59 from 23rd Street Lawrence to near Pleasant Grove are finished with bridge work pending final corrections. The 3.1 miles from 28th Street to Shank Hill will be four laned. the final 2.1 miles will be two lanes with rights of way reserved for future expansion.

Lawrence teachers to see pay hikes average $102

Lawrence School District plans salary increases for teachers averaging about 102 dollars annually, with base pay around 6 350 dollars and many teachers expected to exceed the average. Administrators and 98 non teaching staff will receive raises. cafeteria workers will not. A nine passenger wagon for the vocational dept was approved to be purchased from Turner Chevrolet.

School board approves teacher aides at Pinckney and Wakarusa Valley

The board authorized hiring of teacher aides at Pinckney and Wakarusa Valley with five votes in favor and two against. Dr. Bradley and Larry Hatfield opposed, citing evolving views on aides. Aides expected in crowded classrooms, paid at 1.75 dollars or more, and assigned to non instructional tasks.

Second Girl's Body Located In Outward Bound Tragedy

In central Oregon Three Sisters wilderness a second Outward Bound expedition member Lorene LaRhette age 17 from Sudbury Massachusetts was found dead. Earlier victim Glen Howden 21 from Fall Creek Oregon died of exposure. Survivor Pam Sullivan 18 from Seattle reported LaRhette wandered seeking help after a storm.

Faculty Photos Set at Kansas University

Kansas University will photograph faculty and staff for identification cards next week. Monday shots in the Kansas Union, Tuesday in Strong Hall, Wednesday in Hoch Auditorium, Thursday in Summerfield Hall, and Friday in Murphy Hall.

Oskaloosa Board Approves New School Plans and Bond Vote

The Oskaloosa Board approved a floor plan and exterior renderings for a new grade school and set October 9 for a 650000 bond election at the American Legion Hall. The project would replace the four room building with added classrooms at the high school and via mobiles. Administration updates included special education cooperation with McLouth and Valley Falls, a district psychologist, and volunteers to aid lower grade reading levels.

Heavy voter turnout as Lawrence closes registration

City Clerk Vera Mercer notes a surge in the final four hours as 221 voters registered in Lawrence for the Sept 28 city county building election. Total registrations for the day reached 378 and 853 for the period, with 594 students and 405 aged 18 to 20. The election concerns a 5.6 million dollar bond for a city county government center housing administration courts and law enforcement.
