Washington AP reports President Eisenhower will address the nation from the White House in a 15 minute radio television speech about talks with allied cadets in Western Europe. The address, scheduled for Thursday night, will run 5 30 p m to 3 45 p m CST, with major networks set to carry it live barring any delayed broadcast.
The Senate Banking Committee approved a third measure worth about a billion dollars, after assurances from President Eisenhower that he would sign. Major changes drop a 50 million direct loan for college classrooms and modify FHA and urban renewal funding timelines. The bill keeps low rent public housing and elderly housing programs, with a two year draw of urban renewal grants. The measure likely faces Senate action midweek.
Secretary James P. Mitchell and President Eisenhower held a half hour talk on the steel strike. The half million workers have been on strike for nine weeks with no negotiation progress. Mitchell said he updated the President and the discussion did not cover invoking Taft Hartley or emergency powers, though an Oct. 11 review of injunctive options was noted.
Harlan Miller Jr of the Lawrence Crusaders Club won two trophies at the Great Bend drag races, taking top honors in Class B gas. A Crusaders car co owned by Clifford Burgert and Gerald Salsbury won top time in Class A gas, and another club car shared by four members won top roadster placement.
Sandra Louise Wilson infant daughter of Sgt and Mrs Dell Wilson of Olathe died Sunday at Kansas University Medical Center. Melvin W. Goff 62 of 4725 Vt. St. died unexpectedly at home. Funeral arrangements to be announced by Rumsey Funeral Home. A lifelong area resident, he was a car salesman for over 40 years. Survived by wife Marguerite. daughters Gloria Larrabee and Ann Behnke. son M. Ward Goff. sister Mrs. Lawrence Morris. brothers Ivan Goff and Mary A. Goff.
A Wichita chiropractor, Dr. B. W. Mayse, pleaded innocent to misdemeanor drug possession and sale charges. Trial date set for Sept. 28. bond posted at $750. Also noted: George Robert Burns, 26, Minneapolis, charged on marijuana possession and sale. six of 21 others arraigned after raids.
The Central Labor Union announced its Labor Day program in Alexandria Louisiana. The edition was printed in a non union shop, drawing attention to labor tensions and printing practices.
The Atomic Energy Commission reported that radioactive fallout from last year’s nuclear tests has likely passed its peak. June air samples show fallout as much as 30 percent lower than earlier in the year in some regions, and hot spots after initial tests do not necessarily stay heavily contaminated.
Washington AP The House passed a 1.185 billion public works appropriations bill by a 302 to 93 vote after refusing to drop projects vetoed by President Eisenhower. The measure funds river and harbor flood control and reclamation programs nationwide including 67 vetoed items. The House failed to override the veto by one vote.
Lawrence area car dealer and World War I veteran William Goff, longtime member of the American Legion and 40 & 8, dies. He built his business after selling ice cream, studied at St Louis University, and helped establish the Jayhawk Bar racks for veterans. Survivors include his wife Mary and sister Mrs Ann Behnke Ward Goff, with brothers Ivan and Marion.
McPherson Kansas police say two Iowa men Marvin R. Royal and Gerald R. Leone were arrested on suspicion of armed robbery at Herington. The suspects reported Fort Madison Iowa as their home and were found with three revolvers dynamite sticks a tool kit and cash from Carson service station robbery totaling about 80 dollars.
A Michigan ex convict Alvin Knight 48 broke after three days of silence and led police to a shallow grave 30 miles northeast of East Lansing where state trooper Albert Souden 29 was found shot in the head back and leg with the trooper's pistol. Knight faces first degree murder charges.
U S District Judge Frank M Johnson Jr ruled Montgomery city park segregation unconstitutional and invalidated a city ordinance banning integration in public facilities. All 13 parks remain closed since December 30 with no order to reopen, but if reopened they must be desegregated.
Police traced the burglary of a Wichita jewelry store to Cassoday on the Kansas Turnpike after finding a box and 29 empty watch cases. Detectives say more than 100 watches were stolen and most cases discarded inside, with others found at a cattle overpass three miles south of Cassoday. No further clues were available.
Gary Indiana AP reports Harry Schell 48 was appointed city attorney, first Black person to hold a top Gary office. Schell succeeds Paul Piazza who resigned due to ill health. Born in Atlanta, he came to Gary in 1924, graduated Fisk University and Indiana University law school, and has practiced locally since 1939.

A former convict appeared at police headquarters and said he was the brother of Kansas City pair Jack and Randall Kalinka. He later admitted he is Paul Cooper of St Louis and said he knew the Kalinkas in Missouri penitentiary where he served a robbery sentence. He was released. The Kalinkas, 32, were arrested in University City with jewelry guns needles and other items. A watch from the Denver robbery was identified. Master keys found could unlock any American auto ignitions.
A man's skeleton was found Sunday in a seldom used pasture seven miles west of Ellsworth. Tony Zvolanek, the farm owner, found the remains in tall grass near the Smoky Hill River bank. Sheriff Charles Zvolsky and Coroner Dan Urbanek had few clues about identity or cause of death and reported the man appeared young and dead about a time. A shoe, plaid jacket, blue trousers, a sock and shirt remnants were near the body. The pasture is rarely used and cattle had been moved there as river levels fell.
Junction City Kansas a Waters Hardware employee surprised two burglars Monday night when he went to the store to get a wrist band for a woman who had sprained her wrist. The men forced him to let them out a back door and fled. A check showed eighty dollars taken from a cash register.
Kansas Turnpike logged 65 000 vehicles and 3 900 000 miles over Labor Day weekend. Five accidents were reported including one fatality, the first holiday death in two years, according to Gale Moss general manager.

In Lawrence the deadline nears for annual dental exams for local pupils. Under a new setup started this year they visit their family dentist by appointment for the checkup. If completed before Sept. 25 the service is free of charge.
Police said a pickup parked at 830 Elm St. was robbed of tools valued at 150 dollars. The owner Elbert Chandlee reported the loss, noting the Chandlees were away over the holidays.
London AP report says Prime Minister Macmillan named October 8 for a national poll across 630 districts to choose a new House of Commons. Victory yields up to five years in office. Conservatives seek a majority to keep Macmillan, while Labour leader Hugh Gaitskell would take the premiership if Labour wins. Parliament dissolves September 18 and opens October 27.
John McNown, dean of the Kansas University Engineering School, will attend the Americas Society of Civil Engineers conference at Northwestern University in Evans ton Ill Thursday and Friday. He will present a paper titled Nature of Research to Be Supported by the ASCE and return Saturday.
