IRS turns to private collectors to chase delinquent taxes
The IRS, enabled by the 2004 Act, will hire private debt collectors to pursue unpaid taxes at 21 to 24 cents per dollar. Three firms start the first phase: CBE Group, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, and Pioneer Credit Recovery, with more to follow. Agencies cannot file liens or levy assets and must avoid third party disclosures. A taxpayer may request IRS involvement in writing, and payments should be made to the U.S. Treasury, not individuals.
