Free State High sophomore Alysha Valencia dominated the Saints Challenge at Johnson County Community College, winning the girls two mile in 11 48 and signaling a strong early season for the Firebirds who placed fourth. Shawnee Mission Northwest led the boys and girls fields as Lawrence High and Ottawa also posted solid results.

McPherson Edges Haskell to Take 20 13 Victory
McPherson College quieted a 13 13 deadlock with Eric Johnson's five yard run late in the third quarter lifting them to a 20 13 win over Haskell Indian Nations University Saturday night. Chad Murphy sparked HINU with an 89 yard kickoff return and Pete Hahn threw for 74 yards while Cody Wilson and Chris Muniz had three receptions each.

Evangel scored all points in the first half to secure a 28-15 victory over Baker in Springfield. Baker found two second-half TDs from Jon Reeves and Justin Cobb after Martin Updike threw for 132 yards and one interception. Reeves rushed 30 times for 128 yards for Baker.
