Unusual mix of cases on hold during Supreme Court break
The Supreme Court receives about 8,000 appeals a year, but only about 80 are reviewed. Some petitions are serious, others odd or frivilous, with or without attorneys. Notable cases include a tattoo artist challenging a tattoo ban and a transsexual's claim on her husband’s estate. The court waives filing fees for those who cannot afford it and has seen rising unpaid filings while paid cases fall.
