Bitter remarks marked Labor Day as union leaders defended workers amid disputes over a new labor control bill and wage demands during a steel strike. President Eisenhower cited gains for labor, while James Mitchell noted migrant workers’ low status and pushed for progress.
The United States leads a bid at the United Nations Security Council to send a fact finding mission to Laos amid clashes with North Viet Nam. Laos requests a U N emergency force to counter aggression while North Viet Nam denounces the move as illegal.
The National Safety Council warned the Labor Day period could see a record toll unless drivers act responsibly. Early counts showed more than five deaths per hour from traffic accidents, with a predicted total near 450 for the three-day holiday.
An impressive concert hall named Beethoven Hall will open Tuesday in Bonn, Germany, built as a memorial to Ludwig van Beethoven. The hall cost more than 2.2 million dollars and stands as a commemorative venue for the birthplace of the famed composer.
The $275 000 Presby terian student center at 12th and Oread near Kansas University campus slows due to the nationwide steel strike. Rev John Patton sponsor says work behind schedule by about a month but not halted. Completion date moved to early next year with hopes to enclosure in a month for winter construction. The modern facilities include a hanging fireplace dual entrances on Louisiana and Oread Streets and futuristic staircases.
In Columbus Leo A. Hoegh dodged a newsman question on Sen. Stephen Young’s criticism of civil defense. Hoegh refused to engage the issue, saying only a brief reply when pressed about Young.
President Eisenhower finished a 13 day European swing and flew to Washington to prepare for a planned meeting with Soviet Premier Khrushchev. Bad weather in Iceland canceled a lunch with President Asgeirsson. he travels via Newfoundland to D C and resumes duties after a Scottish golfing break.
Kirby Westheimer a 21 year old Harvard business student bought one million Mexican jumping beans cornering half the world market for his father's novelty firm. Beans shipped in handmade tin containers from Mexico's Sierra Madre region to a St. Louis warehouse by mule bus car train and plane. The beans jump due to moth larvae under the skin and will be marketed in sets of four.
A racial clash at Gwynn Oak Park turned All Nations Day into a mob scene as 40 protestors from the Committee on Racial Equality clashed with a hostile crowd. Pickets were jeered and attacked. Kraft was targeted as leaders dragged from the grounds and police intervened. Six people were charged with disorderly conduct.
UNITED NATIONS N Y The Big Four would announce plans to resume disarmament talks in Geneva at the start of 1960. Britain France the Soviet Union and the United States would lead a 10 nation group including Bulgaria Czechoslovakia Poland and Romania with Western members Canada Italy. Talks would be private outside the United Nations but use the U N Geneva building and report to the Disarmament Commission and the General Assembly.
The three day weekend ends with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and a possible 95 to 100 degree peak. By 10 a.m. the thermometer read 85 degrees after a 74 degree overnight low and no rain is expected. Lawrence has received only 0.04 inch of rain in the past week, building a 0.87 inch deficit for September.
Kansas reports six traffic deaths on the first two days of the Labor Day weekend. Victims include Arthur Czapanskiy 70 of Marysville killed in a three car crash on U S Highway 36. Anna Wells 70 of Independence in a rural two car collision. Roger Lessman 15 son of Sheriff Bill Lessman involved in a crash. Laurence Ross 2 fatally struck by a truck in Winfield. Gust Carlson 60 of Morrowville in a one car crash near Linn. Roy Howard 23 of Topeka on the Kansas Turnpike. Arlene M Yahn 19 a marine at Olathe NAS killed near Merriam. Missouri reporting fourteen deaths Saturday and Sunday.
Clarence Meier, 36, died at the University of Kansas Medical Center from injuries after a truck tire exploded in Russell, Kansas, sending a tire gauge into his eye and head. Surgeons removed the gauge but he succumbed Saturday.

Four 15 year old boys from Lawrence and Edgerton are in Juvenile Court custody after a Sunday spree that included two burglaries two car thefts and a high speed chase on the Kansas Turnpike. One boy escaped after a truck pursuit and wreck near Cassaday Interchange, authorities said. no injuries reported.
Douglas County reports no serious highway wrecks during the Labor Day weekend as Sheriff Dale Chappell and the Kansas Highway Patrol run DUI checks and license spot checks. Five drivers face DUI charges, several passengers charged as drunk on a public highway, and some drivers cited for defective brakes or lacking licenses. Four county road accidents caused minor damage or injuries. one driver narrowly escaped serious harm. Traffic remains heavy and police plan more speed checks at night with radar. An airman, James D. Barnett, 19, of McConnell AFB is noted in the report.
The forecast calls for generally fair and hot conditions in Northeast Kansas through Tuesday with highs around 95 to 100 and lows in the 70s. Readings show a 60 percent humidity this afternoon and a 90 percent humidity at night, with a five day outlook noting temperatures near normal in the west and mid 80s east and a cooldown by the weekend.
