Northwest pilots pessimistic about contract talks
Northwest Airlines and its striking pilots union met with a federal mediator to jump start talks on pay and job security. The parties hoped to set a date for further talks though optimism was low. The dispute centers on an about 180 million dollar annual gap in compensation. Additionally, about 60 Northwest mechanics report furloughs and long term storage of 40 planes as talks continue. Northwest, a major carrier, carries about 150000 passengers daily and operates 1700 flights. The DOT ordered two feeder carriers to restore service to 17 small towns, with Northwest required to support the affiliates.
