Jail Bound Youth Attempts Suicide in Local Jail

A 15 year old boy from Independence Missouri held as a runaway tried to kill himself Saturday evening in a cell at Lawrence Municipal Jail. He used a broken electric light bulb to cut his left arm and foot, was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and returned to custody. Police reported a quiet weekend with calls mainly about drunks prowlers investigations and family disturbances.

Car Crash Fatal in Independence Leaves One Dead

Ralph Green aged 56 of Independence died at Research Medical Center from injuries after a two car collision last Wednesday at the north edge of Independence. Two other people were injured.

A terse note explains that the letters V I C T I M S appear on the telephone dial spelling the word victims. The statement adds that giving a name is not required.

Toll tolls rise to seventeen in Missouri crash toll

Labor Day weekend traffic toll in Missouri climbs to at least 17 by midnight. Among the dead is Floyd B Colin 61 of Hillsdale MO. Goldie Colin 61 driver of the car fell asleep, the highway patrol said. The car crossed the median on I 55 near Herculanum and crashed into a bluff just before midnight.

Small Children Treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital

Two children were treated without admission at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Harold Gilbreth, 4, of 1902 Edgelea, had a fractured leg after an incident Sunday evening. Shanan Booth, 5, of Rt. 1, was treated for brown spider bites early today.

Kennedy Center Opens After 13 Years of Plans

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts opens to the public after 13 years since enabling legislation. Leonard Bernstein’s Mass debuts as part of inaugural week, with performances through Thursday and a formal opening Wednesday. Reading Remains In Fair Condition After Motorcycle Crash

Ronald A. Reading, 21, of 1311 W Sixth remains in fair condition in the acute care ward of Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was admitted Friday for a skull fracture and other injuries after his motorcycle fell while avoiding a car on Ninth Street near Alabama. Reading slid under the car driven by Zora L.
