Allied forces retook Yongchon after a counterattack that halted Communist thrusts toward Taegu and regained ground. Red forces deployed 34 Russian tanks along the front while American Patton tanks and Fifth Air Force bombers supported the defense, with 17 red tanks knocked out by dusk. Taegu remained calm as battles raged east and north, and the Reds suffered about 2,035 casualties in 24 hours as fighting continued along the 120 mile front.

Street closure planned on New Hampshire for road work
City Engineer J C Harper announced that a block of New Hampshire Street will close tomorrow for a new concrete roadway linking to Sixth Street. Access to Lawrence Paper and Reuter Organ factories remains for employees on Sixth Street. Work on the 600 block will proceed with brick removal and grading, with concrete pouring expected in about two weeks. Nineteenth Street paving near Louisiana to Missouri nears completion with final concrete next week. The open lane will be restored on Nineteenth within two weeks.

A $60,000 expansion at Stokely Foods Inc on East Tenth Street will raise cooking capacity by 30 percent. Hauser Construction of Indianapolis begins work today on a concrete, steel framed cook room and boiler room additions, adding two boilers and high speed canning lines. Output will rise to about 250,000 number two cans daily. 170 employees currently on the Lawrence plant payroll. Violent Death Toll Sets New Labor Day Record
The nation s violent death toll for Labor Day weekend reached a record 565 with 389 traffic fatalities, 78 drownings, and other accidents. The 78-hour period ran from 6 p m Friday to midnight Monday. Two Small Girls Reported Missing in North Lawrence
Two young sisters Reba Holladay aged four and Donna aged two are missing from their Maple Street home in North Lawrence. Police comb the Kaw riverfront and area after the mother, busy inside, failed to notice them in the yard for about 20 minutes. A cafe witness near Elm Street and Kaw river bridge saw two girls matching their descriptions walking toward the river, but no positive trace so far. The children wore identical yellow and gray plaid dresses. Reba has dark hair and brown eyes, Donna blond with blue eyes. An alert was sent to nearby cities and the highway patrol as search continues.
