Lawrence fertilizer plant eyed for development site
A Lawrence fertilizer plant site, silent since 2001, faces heavy nitrate and hexavalent chromium contamination and possible asbestos, but officials say environmental issues are manageable and discuss future uses, financing, and joint city county strategy at a Tuesday session behind closed doors. Legacy Power Plant on KU Campus Shaped by Spain Link
Documents in University Archives note the Power Plant was funded with 16 000 by the Legislature and designed by John Haskell. The building, inspired by Spain’s Santa Maria del Naranco, burned in 1898 and was rebuilt, later repurposed and partially preserved as limestone facade integrity drew praise from historian Karl Gridley and architect Jim Calcara.
