The US submarine sank to 188 feet off Cape Henlopen after a valve failed to close during a dive. Thirty eight crew members survived after stern breaches and improvised wigwag signals attracted rescuers. They worked through chlorine fumes and darkness, later aided by the destroyer Beaver and ships Acanthus and Ohio.
Eighteen Manhattan Hoy Scouts will spend Sunday in Lawrence en route to Kansas City. They will stop in Perry tonight and be met by Lawrence Scouts who will escort them to town. Fire last night at Valley Falls destroyed an electric light plant that had just been completed and provided current to Valley Falls, McLouth, and Oskaloosa. Loss estimated at 35000 dollars with plans to rebuild.
Charles H. Eberhart Republican candidate for county commissioner from the third district submitted his resignation to the Neutlas county Republican committee this afternoon. The committee began steps to fill the vacancy while discussions covered forming a women's auxiliary for the Douglas county central committees. Vacancies were filled by appointments to several precincts. County chairman will fill the Big Springs vacancy after consulting with Lecompton member Ross C. Gearheart, who represented national and state committees and outlined the campaign finances.
J. J. Elly, a city real estate dealer, reports an average of one deal daily this past week. Notable sales include 1021 Maine Street to Professor Nappen from the University of Illinois ecological department, 1928 Ohio to Mrs. W. F. Honierson, 1420 Maple Lane to Henry Buseh, 613 Ohio to W. C. Ellis, 1128 Maple Lane to Perry O. Burk, and the old Bullone home at T24 New Hampshire. Earlier, he completed a major sale two months ago, moving the Stubbs Building at 1101-03 Massachusetts for $45,000 to J. F. Metsker.
Miss Ruth McDonald reports a fire Monday night destroyed E N Baer’s home a quarter mile west of McLouth while the women were in the fields. Clothing jewelry and money were burned. Burglars are believed to have entered the house and set it afire.
W. W. Cleland, Commissioner of Public Utilities, says every mud street in Lawrence presents a problem. Most city streets are waved, but many outlying North Lawrence north and south streets remain unpaved and practically impassable due to continued rains, which halt street work.
Members of the Douslaz county farm bureau from various parts of the county, with County Farm Agent CO Smith, were slated to appear before the board of county commissioners this afternoon seeking a room in the courthouse. The board planned to take up the appropriation issue again.

A reunion of the 253rd All Kansas Infantry and attached men from Illinois and Wisconsin will convene September 4 to 6 at the Regimental Building Camp Funston Kansas. Officers and men who served are invited with informal gatherings planned. Guests include Col George Blackington from Detroit and Col Reeves from Washington, plus Sgt Scheel and companions from Campantle and Company I from Atchison and Co B from Leavenworth.

Officials of Bunty Brothers confectioners and three wholesale grocers were indicted by a federal grand jury on a charge of profiteering in sugar. The case centers on illicit manipulation of sugar prices and supply.
Frank McDonald will assist in coaching at Haskell Institute as classes set to begin. The opening exercises, led by Reverend Frank Jennings, mark the start of the school year with new student arrivals from Oklahoma and other states. Classification starts Monday and finish by Tuesday as teachers and staff organize Indian school activities.
County farm agent RO Smith held a corn club meeting this morning at the courthouse area amid fear of poor turnout from bad weather. Some attendees arrived by train as preparation began to select a Douglas county team for the Kansas free fair contest in Topeka next week. Kansas City branch of the American Shorthorn Breeders Association opens September 1 to aid southwest raisers with marketing breeding and feeding problems. W. A. Cochel heads the office and serves as southwest representative. formerly led Kansas State Agriculture animal husbandry. Located in a downtown hotel lobby, it is the association’s first U S branch.
County Treasurer W I McKone announced the office will remain open to receive current or delinquent tax payments and to redeem property set for sale. Tax sale is scheduled Tuesday morning at the county treasurer's office. About twenty parcels have unpaid 1916 taxes and may be struck from the sale if redeemed beforehand.
Clyde Taylor and Modest Fo were arraigned last night on charges of stealing 12 sacks from Underwood and Son. Both were confined in the county jail and each placed under bond of 500 to appear at a preliminary hearing next Tuesday at 2 PM. The bond was not made. Directors of the Chamber of Commerce will meet for a luncheon Monday at 12 36 PM to discuss winter plans. The first fall meeting is set for Tuesday at noon with a luncheon.
Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees slugged his 43rd homer of the season in the third inning versus Boston. There were no runners aboard as pitcher Jones took the mound for the Red Sox.
Hargiss graduate Max Klein arrived in Lawrence to coach the high school team. Practice starts Monday as Klein, in peak shape, prepares an ambitious schedule including open dates and home and away games against Atchison Abilene Manhattan Topeka Beatrice and Tope.
Several hundred postmasters from Missouri Kansas and Oklahoma gathered in Kansas City for the annual tri state convention. John C. Koons will deliver the principal address at a banquet tonight with Otto Praeger Gov Dock and Cecil Beasley also on the speaking program. A school of instruction for district postmasters will be held under N C Collins with local organizers arranging the event.
C. Rutter was bitten by a copperhead while on a firing trip at Rock Creek Harrell place on Thursday. He and his son R. Rutter, visiting from Knoxville, were in a tent when the bite occurred as he gathered fuel. He killed the snake with an axe, treated the wound, and returned to town with a swollen hand and arm, reportedly improving by today.
The Journal World has purchased a Model 8 Linotype and a folding machine for job printing, now enroute from the factories. The installation will bring the plant to sixteen power machines, each with its own motor. Indian girls from Haskell Institute shopped in Lawrence this forenoon. Mayor Kreeck urges reflection on the day while two gatherings occur at Holton's Grove with speeches by Lippert and local figures, plus a Knights of Pythias picnic at Brown's Grove. A Vinland versus Belvoir baseball game and a noon edition of the Journal-World are planned.
Lawrence fire crews rushed to 523 Louisiana Street at 6 20 AM to find no blaze and doors locked. Neighbors reported flashing lights seen from upstairs windows from 4 to 6 AM, but firefighters found no fire or evidence of entry. They suspect a burglar used a flashlight and left before dawn. owners are away on vacation.
Kansas City report states Judge John A. Tarsney once congressman from the district from 1888 to 1896 died in a local hospital aged 75 after a several months illness. He had lived in Kansas for 48 years. George E. Smith sold his 638 New Hampshire Street residence to Dr. C. B. Miller of Eudora who will rent to Mrs. Ben Urbansky. Dr Miller was prompted by a Journal-World article. Ministerial Alliance to meet at City Y M C A Monday at 10 20 with Chancellor Tandley of the University as speaker.
