Pigeon shoot protest halted at Labor Day event near Harrisburg
Animal rights activists disrupted the Labor Day pigeon shoot in Hearns PA locking in a human chain across fields to free birds. About 5 000 pigeons were to be shot as 7 000 to 9 000 spectators watched. Twelve protesters were arrested after locks were cut and three more later for entering fields. Organizers say the event raises about 40 000 for local charities. The Fund For Animals had vowed not to show up but protesters still entered the area and were later charged with trespass and disorderly conduct.

Gene Link to Skin Cancer Grows With New Findings
Scientists bolster evidence that a specific gene guards against basal cell skin cancer. Damages in the gene, dubbed patched, may permit tumors to form. A Yale team reports mutations in non inherited basal cell cancers, suggesting the gene’s role in tumor suppression and potential topical treatments.

Scientists locate chromosome region linked to type 2 diabetes
Researchers report a chromosome segment may harbor a gene linked to type 2 diabetes, the common form affecting about 15 million Americans. The team studied 217 members from 26 Swedish-speaking Botnia families in Finland, noting the region could contain around 100 genes and aims to reveal diabetes biology for therapies.
