Vet honors fallen buddy at Punchbowl grave marker
World War II veteran Jay Zeamer returned to Honolulu to pay tribute to his friend and fellow Medal of Honor recipient Joe Sarnoski. The pair faced intense air combat on June 16, 1943 over Bougainville, sustaining wounds but surviving, while Sarnoski died later. Zeamer, then 77, searched for Sarnoski’s grave, finally kneeling before a lone granite marker at Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery to remember their service and sacrifice.
