Kansas state population climbs to a record level with the Board of Agriculture census reporting 1,999,457 residents in 1954, up from 1,965,112 in 1953 and 1,905,299 in 1950. Updated local counts by Sedgwick County assessor Ira C. Watson place Wichita slightly higher as figures are finalized.

Vice President Nixon will speak on the statehouse grounds in Topeka on September 16 changing from luncheon to assembly to reach more attendees. The event supports the GOP bid to reclaim the 1st District seat held by Democrat Howard S. Miller with appearances by State Rep. William H. Avery and Sen. Andrew F. Schoeppel. After a half hour address Nixon will attend a luncheon before heading to Wichita for a night speech.
Weather Bureau predicts sunny weather through Saturday with highs of 100 to 105 across Kansas. Salina Wamego and Topeka tied for the day’s high at 105 while Concordia reached 95. Lows range from 79 at Emporia to 63 at Larned with most values in the 70s.
President Eisenhower argued for a bill authorizing two large reservoirs and nine local flood protection projects on the Kansas River basin. The plan would allow diversion of water from Lake Michigan by Milinore and the Chicago Sanitary District. Estimated federal cost for the Kanana River basin projects is 873.71 million dollars. Milford and Perry reservoirs would be funded by the federal government, while affected cities would share local project costs.
A U S Fish and Wildlife Service twin engine plane crashed on Admiralty Island in Alaska. Four passengers perished at the scene and pilot Bob Meek of Juneau survived after hiking to seek help. The victims named include George Kelez Dick Schuman Larry Kolleen and Patti Bidwell Davis a concert musician from New York.
TVA and AEC issued a joint statement saying consensus was reached on fundamental issues of the Dixon Yates private power deal.
