Labor Day Break Ends as City, Police and Fire Set Talks
City officials and Lawrence police and fire associations plan resumed negotiations after a holiday pause. Meetings with firefighters are at 9 a.m. Tuesday and with police at 9 a.m. Wednesday, first formal talks since Aug. 8. The city maintains it will not discuss 1978 pay issues of a 10 percent raise while unions seek it.

Bank deposits and loans tied to Bert Lance probe
The Wall Street Journal reports that Citizens & Southern National Bank in Atlanta issued 390000 in loans to the Bert Lance for Governor Committee while Lance’s National Bank of Georgia boosted its interest free correspondent account to about 4.4 million at the same bank. A man died after an ungrounded extension cord connected to a power drill caused an electric shock at a Wausau construction site. Workers performed CPR and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
