AEC Names Three Men To Receive Citations In Their Nuclear Work
The Atomic Energy Commission awards three men for nuclear work. Dr. Frank H. Spedding of Ames Laboratory produced uranium for the first self-sustaining reactor in 1942. William Webster of Boston aided nuclear electric power development including Yankee Atomic Station. Dr. Henry D. Treasury says Americans are largely not redeeming silver certificates for profit. Only 4.7 million of the almost 8 million retirements were redeemed for silver, while the rest circulated or were sent to the Treasury. Speculators offer 20 to 30 cents on the dollar to buy silver certificates, then redeem for silver at $1.29 an ounce and sell higher on the open market. For July and August, redemptions lagged retirements, raising free silver to about 103.9 million ounces as the Treasury sells two million ounces weekly.
