GE Faces Coast to Coast Walkout by Largest Union
New York September 24 General Electric Co faces a nationwide walkout by the CIO International Union of Electrical Workers seeking higher pay and pensions. About 23,000 union members are already out in New York and Massachusetts, with 3,000 from an aircraft engine plant. Some 35,000 more are slated to join within three days, including 400 at the government atomic energy plant in Schenectady. The strike followed last minute concessions from both sides that failed to close the bargaining gap. The IUE has about 60,000 members in 51 GE plants across 25 cities, with a strong majority in 32 factories.
