Lawrence man pleads no contest to sex crimes against two youths
A 40-year-old Lawrence man Stevie L. Stafford pleaded no contest Friday to two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child involving an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl. A third charge of attempted rape was dropped under a plea deal. Bail set at 75000, sentencing hearing 4 p.m. Oct. 12. each count carries 25 years to life. Pro Tem Judge James George scheduled a preliminary hearing for Tuesday.

Amtrak warned on route funding for western Kansas line
Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico officials told Amtrak they lack the millions needed to repair and maintain deteriorating tracks between Hutchinson and Garden City on the Chicago to Los Angeles Southwest Chief route. The line, owned by BNSF, is kept just enough for freight at 30 to 40 mph. If no solution by 2014, Amtrak would shift the Southwest Chief south through Oklahoma and Texas, cutting Hutchinson Garden City and Dodge City service with a Wichita stop potential in 2016.

Two 19 year olds charged in KU pistol whipping case
Sterling James Wilkins and Garrett Paulson, both 19, face charges in Douglas County District Court for attempted aggravated robbery and theft in a Wednesday incident at The Reserve apartments near KU. Wilkins also faces aggravated battery and interfering with a police officer as investigators recovered a handgun, holster and victim’s keys. Bond set at 50000 with a preliminary hearing planned for Tuesday.
