Thieu Remains Lone Candidate in Vietnam Election

In Saigon the government announced that the October 3 election will proceed with President Nguyen Van Thieu as the only candidate after the Supreme Court removed Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky from the ballot. The move ends U S hopes for a multi candidate race and drew a sharp rebuke from Gen Duong Van Minh.

Heavy DMZ Bombardment Follows North Vietnamese Attack

North Vietnamese gunners launched their heaviest assault in two weeks along the DMZ. The United States answered with land, sea and air bombardment extending into the southern DMZ. More than 550 rockets and mortars hit five South Vietnamese bases and an armored column, wounding six South Vietnamese troops. U S forces reported no American casualties as B 52 bombers, ground guns, and 7th Fleet ships attacked suspected rocket sites and depots in and just south of the DMZ.

Three Men Shot In Hill District Gunfight

In Pittsburgh three people were wounded in a rapid exchange of gunfire outside Precinct Station Two. Sgt. Harold Friedman 27 was in critical condition with a stomach wound at Mercy Hospital. John Mangum 26 in custody on an open charge also in critical condition. Walter Bailey 77, a bystander, was treated for a leg wound and not considered seriously hurt. Police sealed a four block area around the station.

Lawrence seeks federal aid for Emergency Employment Act plan

The Lawrence City Commission voted to authorize City Manager Burford Watson to apply for federal funds under the Emergency Employment Act of 1971 to hire city staff. Dr. Price Named Douglas County Coroner

Judge Frank Gray announced the appointment of Dr. Laurance W. Price Jr. as coroner and Dr. J Alan Sanders as deputy coroner for Douglas County. Their terms run until mid January 1973, with resignations already filed by Dr. James Reed and Dr. Wayne Hird.
