Germany invades Poland prompting Britain and France to mobilize. King George VI signs orders for full armed forces. France calls up 8 million men. Britain and Paris move to war footing as Hitler vows to fight alone and Russian ties are stated.
Reports confirm German forces cross into Poland from East Prussia and other fronts as Danzig is annexed and Polish cities including Krakow Katowice Czestochowa Tczew and Grudziadz face air raids. Britain France Roosevelt seek pledges to limit civilian bombardment and avoid immediate neutrality act action.
Washington September 1 President Roosevelt would activate the neutrality law to bar sales of arms to any belligerent prohibit American travel on belligerent ships and prevent belligerents from floating loans in the United States while allowing normal credits. The Johnson act already limits loans to defaulting debtors.
Rome reports the Italian cabinet will refrain from military operations as Mussolini and ministers meet to decide Italy's course as Germany's ally. Hitler's stance on Italy's aid remains noted amid French mobilization and German plans with Poland. Moscow notes rumors of a potential break in nonaggression pacts meet skepticism.
The Federal Reserve board announced steps to maintain an orderly government bond market. It told all banks that the twelve Federal Reserve banks stand ready to lend on any government obligations they own to avoid liquidating bonds during this critical time. Berlin bulletin reports German advances toward their objectives from Pomerania Silesia and East Prussia.

The Lawrence area reports August as the rainiest since 1921 and coolest since 1927. Prof. C. Jd. Posey notes 8.31 inches total rainfall, 4.26 inches above normal, with eight rainy days and three thunderstorms. The mean August temp was 71.90 F, 4.60 below normal, and nine conducive to variable winds from the south to northwest.
Havas reports war front expanding across Poland and Slovakia. Bombs hit Westerplatte Puck Krakow Katowice Tczew and Gdynia while Warsaw warns and fires anti aircraft batteries. German offensive moves toward Mlawa Ciechanow Dzialdowo Czestochowa.
Dr. W W Davis chairman of the Kansas University history department and athletic board sails from Cherbourg France with Mrs Davis and son Lane. Lane's letter from Muren Switzerland dated August 21 confirms the trip.
The Chamber of Commerce orchestrates seven Lawrence stores to sell $1.95 ten gallon hats bearing a special insignia to publicize the National Cornhusking contest. Wearing begins tomorrow across Lawrence and Douglas County as a non profit promo with shipments en route and orders from traveling salesmen nationwide.
Cooler weather remains slow to arrive in Kansas after record highs earlier in the week. Clouds may lower temperatures today and tomorrow with no rain expected. Forecaster S. D. Flora notes the drought persists across the Midwest, with Kansas needing rain for pastures and grain sorghums while corn yields remain near peak.
