A different kind of autumn hike at Clinton State Park

KU's orienteering club hosted its first major meet Sunday at Clinton State Park near Lawrence despite rain. About 60 participants tackled one of four courses, organized by Gene Wee with SUA sponsorship, showing persistence for an outdoor sport.

Turkey prize for Journal-World contest winners

This week’s Journal-World football contest awards prizes for top finishers. The winner receives a 15-pound dressed turkey while the second and third place finishers each receive a 10-pound turkey.

Three miss entry wins turkey in Journal-World contest

Veteran contestant Ralph Gentry of 510 Ohio wins the 15-pound first prize turkey in last week's Journal-World Football Contest, edging three miss entrants on KU and Iowa State scores. Richard Koester and James Tryon also win 10-pound birds. all will be notified by mail to claim prizes. Upsets mark college football with several five and six miss entries seen.

Local students mostly meet immunization requirements

Lawrence School District 497 reports nearly all students have fulfilled polio diphtheria whooping cough tetanus measles and rubella shots with a 60 day grace period ending Friday. One high school girl and one or two at the extension center are noncompliant. nurses at junior high and elementary schools report 100 percent compliance.

Local group forms to challenge the Douglas intangibles tax

The Douglas County Tax Study Group plans a 7 p.m. Thursday meeting at the Lawrence Public Library to push abolition of the 3 percent intangibles levy on interest and dividends. Lloyd M. Davies leads the group, noting elderly residents likely oppose the tax, and a county commission talk is planned.

Blue Cross Plans to Limit KU Student Health Coverage

Blue Cross Blue Shield may stop student coverage for some Kansas University students. A six credit minimum for undergrads and three for grads is proposed, with current rates of 210 for single, 460 for student plus, and 700 for student family. The advisory board will confer with EU administrators on a formal definition of student status.

City to weigh downtown development plan after hall site choice

City commissioners will consider a $2,500 action program to spur development at the 600 block of Massachusetts Street, following the selection of the Bowersock site for the new city hall. The plan includes a development package with visuals and funding sources.
