Court strikes down 1991 law on seizure of homesteads

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a 1991 law allowing seizure of homes of convicted drug offenders is unconstitutional. Justice Donald Allegrucci noted the state constitution protects homestead property from forced sale with limited exceptions. The case arose after Clarence Gilbert was ordered to forfeit his rural home and land following a marijuana conspiracy conviction.

Mail delivery problems resurface in Lawrence

Lawrence experiences a renewed bout of irregular mail delivery as local routes were reconfigured and nine employees left for optional retirement on Oct. 2.
