American troops and marines cling to a six mile corridor to defend Guadalcanal air base as Japanese landings continue. Navy reports say 12 light tanks destroyed and torpedo boats scored a hit on a Japanese destroyer while air forces bomb and strafe western positions.
The War Office announced that fast African troops completed Britain’s occupation by entering Fianarantsoa, the southern island’s key town. The capture extends British control about 260 miles from the earlier capital Tananarive, signaling limited French resistance remaining.
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt viewed the German occupied coast of France from the White Cliffs of Dover using a navy officer’s binoculars and said it was very exciting to be near the enemy. An air raid alarm had sounded in Dover shortly before her arrival by private train from London but the town remained quiet during her visit.
The Red Army announced a decisive armored clash in Stalingrad northside factory district with Soviet tanks driving German infantry back. About 175 students from 24 high schools and two colleges in Kansas attend a two day debate institute at the University of Kansas under the extension division. Principal speaker Bower Aly of Missouri discusses The War of Nerves as the group sponsors the event and a luncheon.
A cool front crossed Kansas with scattered rains up to .89 inch in Coffeyville over 24 hours. Weatherman S D Flora forecast colder weather but not extreme cold, with a likely freeze in the northwest and escape for eastern counties. Topeka had .24 inch rain and Geneseo .17, after a 77 degree high yesterday and an 11 degree average low.
William M. Jeffers announced the purchase of Ford's tire plant in Detroit for shipment to Russia. The modern facility would enable production of over a million tires per year and fulfills lend-lease commitments, with officials noting no link to obtaining Soviet synthetic rubber secrets.
The British destroyer Veteran of 1 120 tons was sunk, announced by the admiralty with no further details. The ship was completed in November 1919 and carried 134 crewmen. Relatives of the casualties have been informed.
German high command says and claims in a special communique that North Atlantic U boats attacked a fully laden convoy bound for Britain, sinking nine ships totaling 68 500 tons. No allied confirmation is reported.

St. Louis October 30 The navy supervisor of shipbuilding in St. Louis announced that naval work at six yards under his jurisdiction will be suspended on November 15 to conserve critical materials. The yards producing auxiliary navy boats are in Omaha and Kansas City Missouri Kansas City and Leavenworth Kansas Quincy Illinois and Memphis Tennessee.
Evangelist Hal Starr conducts a revival at 628 Massachusetts Street every evening except Monday at 8 p.m. Last night he preached on the Eleventh Commandment. He will speak tonight on The Standard of the Eleventh Commandment and Sunday on Seven Reasons Why I Am Glad I Am a Christian.

Miss Tracy Mitchell spoke under the Republican central committee in the courtroom last night urging colored people to pursue equal education and political involvement. She credited Americanism to her race, critiqued intraracial discord, and attacked Democrats and the New Deal while noting strong turnout at Republican headquarters.
Y R E Farley head of Kansas United Dry Forces charged 300 cases of sealed liquor were delivered to the officers mess at the Topeka air base in defiance of Kansas sovereignty. He said the liquor was brought by truck from Kansas City and stayed the night after unloading. He called the move a constitutional outrage and attacked what he called dictatorship. Earlier he criticized liquor shipments to Camp Funston, Salina army air base and other posts.
Topeka address reports that county welfare boards are urged to set up dental care programs with county dental societies or dentists. Fay N. Seaton, chairman of the state welfare board, said Butler and Ottawa counties already adopted dental insurance plans similar to the medical insurance program.
