York stock market on Oct 30 shows a broad rally with many issues advancing and turnover near 17 million shares. Governors plan holidays and later opening hours to ease trading stress as London and Berlin markets prepare for delays.
Kansas forecast calls for cloudy skies tonight and Thursday with possible rain or snow and cooler temperatures in the east and southeast. An explosion near Winfield injures one person and damages windows and farm buildings south and west of town. A separate Kansas City report notes Harry Le Stafford, 46, facing liquor sale charges tied to a student incident and awaiting federal prison in Leavenworth.
An Air Express plane piloted by James Coles landed safely near Albuquerque New Mexico after being grounded by a severe snowstorm. Two special rooters trains announced by Union Pacific for the Kansas Nebraska game in Lincoln. The 6 am Saturday Lawrence departure returns from Lincoln by 10 pm. tickets at depots before Saturday or on Saturday morning. A second train leaves Lawrence Friday 7:30 am, arrives Lincoln 2 pm, round trip $6.70 with return by Monday night.
A tornado near Houston Texas injured one man perhaps fatally and wounded two women and two men. Half a dozen houses barns and garages were destroyed with several other dwellings unroofed. The affected areas included Harbor Addition Griggs Road and Alef.
Washington reports Dr. Julius Klein assistant secretary of commerce stated in a national broadcast that American business should expect no adverse results from the stock market collapse. He argued the industrial and commercial structure remains sound with strong purchasing power and stable prices despite market gyrations. minimal numbers are affected.

The director of the unique school of religion, led by Dr. M Willard Lampe, will speak at a Thursday evening service at First Presbyterian Church during dedication week. Dr Lampe, recent Penn and University of Pennsylvania roles, will discuss The State University and the Church, with Frank G Richard of Topeka also presenting on Present Day Religious Education. A 52 voice chorus under Dean B D Swarthout will sing.

Plans call for moving Weaver store stock to the former Innes building which becomes the new Weaver location. After Saturday closing, Weaver opens Monday at Ninth and Massachusetts. The vacated Weaver will house a temporary post office for about fourteen months during federal building addition work. Postmaster C B Hosford notes the move will start once stock departs. The University of Kansas School of Fine Arts announced a student recital to be held tomorrow afternoon in the University auditorium at 3 o clock. The program features a Forest and Stream song cycle by Prof. Charles Skilton performed by Margaret Drennon and Ilan Marin. Dorothy Haymes will sing, with instrumental pieces by Bertrude Brown James Thomas Louise Stoner Faire Voran Marion McNabb and Evelyn Swarthout.
Mrs Charles F Scott wife of Iola Register publisher and former congressman died at home in Tola Kansas after a lengthy illness. She served on the national board of foreign missions for the Presbyterian church and was active in federation women’s clubs. Funeral services set for 2 30 pm Friday at the First Presbyterian Church.
The Rev. Assman will be installed tonight as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence. He has served as editor and church leader in Oklahoma, with a long background in religious education and service to university and student groups. The service at West Minster Hall will feature a full program with hymns, solos, and a sermon by Rev. William S. Danda.
Thieves entered the Metlenahan Lecompton store early yester night and took substantial merchandise and about $15 in coins from the till. Items stolen included four dozen pairs of overalls and jackets, ten house dresses, tent aprons, three boys sweaters, fifteen plaits of shoes, and three boxes of heavy underwear. Entry was gained through a damaged back door. the screen door hook was lifted and crating removed from a broken window pane. Sheriff Rutherford and Deputy Turner investigated, with finger prints photographed at the scene. results of analysis to be announced.
