Tokyo reads Truman address with cautious optimism as Japan seeks a place in world society while MacArthur orders St Pauls University to restore Christian curriculum and demands accountability for schools once aided by American gifts.
Civilian guards will replace 30 GIs at the grave and estate of the late President Roosevelt in Hyde Park. George A. Palmer of Vanderbilt National Park said Interior Department guards will take over duties. Ottawa slate notes city manager plan discussed at Chamber meeting.
Twenty vessels including service transports are due in Seattle within 10 days to discharge 22,000 servicemen. During the same period about 8,500 men are slated to sail for service in Japan.
Fire crews responded to a small blaze in a model T Ford on the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street at 10 50 Saturday evening. Chief Paul Inels said only the wiring was damaged and he could not identify the owner of the car.
A minor blaze in the alley behind the Eagles building was put out by the fire department Sunday morning. Roofing removed from the building caught fire, according to Chief Paul Ingels.

Topeka October 29, Secretary of the state board of regents Hubert Brighton says 100 to 200 Kansas State College students were turned away for lack of housing. Emporia State plans 44 trailers for veterans and families. KU eyes Sunflower Ordnance housing. A 44 trailer addition at Emporia may be approved, rental $1 yearly from the federal government, veterans charged $25 to $30 monthly with utilities. A housing committee was formed to study immediate needs and dormitory construction.
Three console radios valued at 109.50 each were stolen from the Jayhawker Varsity and Granada theatres in Lawrence. The theft occurred between midnight and morning while radios were on display to be given away. The Varsity door was unlocked. others were locked. Patrol notes mention panic bars and a prize winner radio missing.
Berlin reports Clyde F E Palmer editor and publisher from Arkansas and Texas presses warns US may remove occupation troops too quickly risking a lost peace. He says replacements are non combat and easily swayed by German propaganda while praising the American military government and questioning UNRRA staffing.
In Battle Creek Michigan the CIO United Retail Wholesale and Department Store Workers Union denied General Foods Corporation permission to remove 100 carloads of food and cigarettes bound for the war department. The move threatened to jeopardize a five week strike involving about 1500 workers. Irving Abramson national director of the union commented on the issue amid wage dispute talks centered on a 25 cent per hour raise.

Harold Dean Tranbarger, son of Mr and Mrs Tranbarger of 1312 Rhode Island street, accidentally shot himself with a .22 rifle at home Saturday. The bullet fractured a bone in his right leg but hospital reports his condition as good.
Washington launches final war bond drive to finish the job with six million volunteers and a national broadcast by Treasury Secretary Vinson. Honoring armed forces heroes, ceremonies nationwide mark the push to raise 11 billion in bonds by December 8 including 2 billion in small denomination E Bonds.
Frank T. Stockton dean of the school of business will discuss Natural Resources Their Relation to Power and Peace in Fraser theater tomorrow night as part of the America at Peace series. The program continues with experts on the United States and the United Nations and the American Farm Problem set for February 19.
The November district court docket lists about 150 total cases with 93 divorce actions. Twelve criminal cases 10 appeals from Lawrence police court are also listed. court opens Monday November 5 with jurors reporting November 12.
A purse belonging to Mrs. Bruce McKee containing about $84 was stolen from a car in the McKee driveway around midnight. The car was rummaged but only the purse and cash were missing. Mrs. Cora Hoover found the purse this morning in the 2300 block on Vermont Street and notified Mrs. McKee after reporting the find. A pile of burnt matches at the scene suggested the thief may have rummaged through the purse.
General Jonathan M. Wainwright will visit the Veterans Administration facility in Wadsworth Kansas on November 6. He travels with aide Col Oliver I. Holman and Kansas City American Legion officials, will lunch at the hospital, tour the facility, then head back to Kansas City in the afternoon.
Mid Continent Airlines reports September passenger traffic of 17,004 on revenue flights, up 126 percent from September 1944, with revenue up 77 percent year over year. Air mail pay rate fell to 22.86 cents per mile as miles flown rose.

Leigh of 1700 Louisiana Street was aboard the Colby Victory when it docked at Newport News, Virginia yesterday.

A week-long observance marks the 75th anniversary of the Missouri Kansas Texas railroad in Parsons Kansas with a replica of the 1870 Katy train on arrival. Attendees include Katy officials Raymon J.
