A Chicago grand jury returned two indictments against each of two men accused of diverse charges. The cases involve alleged involvement in criminal schemes with various alleged counterfeiting and fraud activities linking to multiple victims. Authorities have filed formal charges and await court dates.
Judge sets bail at 5 000 per indictment or 10 000 for each of 13 indicted over alleged world series fixing. Indictments charge conspiracy and confidence game against seven White Sox members, three ex players, a boxer, and two gamblers connected to the scandal. Extradition papers prepared. Chicago seeks return of all defendants.
Edmund Stanley former Lawrence schools head and Friends University president arrived in Lawrence to visit a brothel near Hesper and to address Friends church. He recently toured France England Belgium Germany for Friends relief work and will recount conditions he found and relief efforts at 3 PM Sunday at Friends Church, Delaware Street.
In Chicago on October 29 a formal complaint was filed against Miss Alice M Hogge accusing her of allowing fist fights among Webster school pupils from twenty two nationalities. The incident involved Abe Selon and Sylvester Sortina with an in basement bout supervised by the principal.
Two masked men held up the Shapiro jewelry store in the downtown area of St Paul this morning. They entered with pistols, took diamonds from two cases, and fled through congested traffic in a car, the loot valued at about sixty thousand dollars.
Tomorrow two rallies are planned one at Lone Star with Judge Means and Robert A. Steele and a separate meeting for colored voters at the Lawrence court house led by B. R. Powell. On Monday night Congressman E C Little closes the Douglas county campaign at the Lawrence court house.
Richard and Robert Smith and a four year old wandered from home at 1224 Pennsylvania Street. They rode a drifting river boat and were rescued by students who later reported the event to Morton Smith, who thanked the rescuers and said his sick wife could not help.
Washington reporters say agricultural representatives in conference draft a plan to obtain more liberal credits for marketing farm products. They expect to form a committee to recommend procedures. The group commended Comptroller Williams for his welfare of farmers and for exposing high interest rates charged by New York banks.
A Topeka gathering of University alumni at the state teachers convention set a new attendance record with 262 graduates present, surpassing the previous high of 150 at similar events.
In Queerstown Ireland relatives of Terence McSwiney Lord Mayor of Cork refused to board a steamer carrying his body to Cork. A violent scene followed at Holyhead station as mourners, police, and troops clashed while authorities moved the casket to the Rathmore.
A letter to Governor Allen from J. I. Hoover, former Clay county Democratic chair, says Kansas Democrats have collapsed under Howatism and Hawatism. Hoover urges others to quit the party and join Republicans, citing widespread disaffection and letters to state leaders.
A Topeka veterinary official urges strong preventive action as hog cholera spreads in Douglas County. Dr. Case calls for strict sanitation, limited farm visits, cleaning and disinfection, avoiding streams, rapid carcass disposal, prompt veterinary diagnosis, herd vaccination, and proper serum dosage to combat the outbreak.
New York Oct 29 Geo White of the Democratic national committee forecast a Democratic win. He predicted victories in Maryland West Virginia Kentucky Missouri and the border states plus Ohio Indiana New Jersey Connecticut and New Hampshire on the Atlantic seaboard. He also sees Democratic wins in Colorado Arizona Idaho New Mexico Washington Nevada South Dakota Utah Nebraska California North Dakota Minnesota Oregon.
The Vinland district hosts a checker contest with Lawrence led by Captain Yates. Individual scores include Hagerman 1, Nichols 3, Hoskinton 12, Prancis 20, and Clevenger 21. Star performer Barton RW Clevenger shines as Yates vows a rematch in Lawrence.
Dr Gunsulus director of Armour Technical Institute in Chicago will lecture tomorrow at 10 30 am in Fraser Hall on Art in Industry. Slides are valuable and cannot be mailed. Town residents are invited to attend. Mrs P H Pierce visited Kansas City. Welch Welch Chiropractors.
About forty residents convened at the White Schoolhouse in Grant township to urge building a viaduct over Union Pacific tracks on Third Street. The meeting, led by P. S. Sterling, unanimously adopted resolutions asking city and county officials to press Union Pacific to construct the crossing.
Perkine and FP sold their interest in Citizens Bank to WLFE. Otis Perkins retires to focus on his farms. W. El Spalding becomes president again, returning to banking roles he held in Laurener for years. He is described as a safe, successful business man and resumes banking duties at the bank.
President Wilson sent Governor Cox a letter expressing confidence in the Democratic nominee. He praised Cox’s campaign leadership and cited liberal legislation, humane reform, and renewed global faith in democracy as key aims. The president offered to sign the message as a gratified loyal supporter.
Eli Dorsey Post of the American Legion endorsed two constitutional amendments on Good Roads and state aid for farm homes as nonpartisan measures. Veterans argued permanent roads aided France's war effort and could improve peacetime mobility, while the farm amendment aimed to reduce landless citizens and boost home ownership with potential veteran preferences in state housing provisions.
Lawrence Kansas Armistice Day will be marked by an all day program at the American Legion post. A parade featuring service men and bands will march Massachusetts street. In the afternoon a football game between Lawrence and Beatrice high schools is slated with a special Legion seating arrangement. The day ends with a banquet and evening entertainment at the Fraternal Aid Union hall followed by a smoker for ex servicemen. Governor Allen has proclaimed Armistice Day a holiday in Kansas reducing business hours.
County clerk's office reports a large shipment of election equipment and materials to each precinct. Supplies include ballots, booths, tables, chairs, envelopes, affidavits, pens, pencils, ink, blotters, seals, scissors, and instruction cards. Receipts required from election boards on return. Also notes citizenship petition filed and two marriage licenses issued in Douglas County.
