Sheriff Loren Anderson planning an open house for the 22 million Douglas County retention center with ideas including an open house and a spend the night in jail event. Captain Bob Van Hoesen says the 196 inmate facility will open in May with celebration plans to be determined.

The Ottawa school board and Crossland Construction reached a compromise after 18 to 20 plan changes, approving 12 additional days to finish the building. Substantial completion is targeted by November 27 with minor gym and stage work remaining, not affecting move-in. The Oskaloosa board eyed high school renovations, considering two extra classrooms and scaling back work. Estimated expansion cost for the lunchroom and commons is 300000 to 400000 dollars, with bids possible in coming days.
Wellsville School Superintendent Don Williams, serving over 10 years, fell ill during Monday night's board session and was admitted to Olathe Medical Center. An ambulance transported him after an executive session. Board member Robert Poor said they were worried about his well being. Williams was released Tuesday and plans to retire at year end.
Two escapees and an accomplice were arrested at Clinton Lake after a multiagency stakeout. A 4 year old boy, son of one suspect, was removed from the vehicle. Officers found methamphetamine and several charges were filed, with all three held without bond in Douglas County Jail.
The funeral service for Alan Woolard, longtime Lawrence High coach, drew old friends and former students at First United Methodist Church. Kevin G. Henderson, 20, Lawrence, pleaded no contest to three counts alibarty. He was arrested on July 19 and will be sentenced at 8:30 am on November 3. Also reports multiple medical emergencies and a list of marriage licenses issued including several Lawrence and Park City pairs.
Kent and Lori Houk of Lawrence welcomed a baby boy on Tuesday. The newborn adds joy to the Houk family and marks another milestone for the household.
