President Charles de Gaulle of France will privately visit Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in London from November 24 to 26, as announced by the British government.

Sticker of Hastings on Hudson NY is named as a graduate research assistant for the project.
A rare manuscript discovery at the KU library prompts discussion of hidden rare books and the potential for more finds. Spokesman notes the item was identified by scholars after years of review and suggests limited plans for expanding old books study.
Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev told 22nd Congress delegates he does not want to be seen as a dictator. He praised supporters but urged that major decisions come from the central committee through collective discussion and decision.
In Reykjavik a split within the Icelandic Communist party ended with a parliamentary condemnation of Soviet nuclear tests. Three Communists including party President Hannibal Valdemarsson supported the condemnation, seven abstained, and the resolution passed 49 to 0.
The Kansas Federation of Labor AFL-CIO saluted ten Kansans as the most outstanding citizens in the first century of statehood. Honorees include Mrs. Clarina Nichols and nine men such as Dwight D. Eisenhower, Alf Landon, Karl Menninger, and Cyrus K. Holliday, with a labor history volume issued for the Kansas Centennial.
A 22 year old Kansas University senior LeRoy George Rogers of 1300 Tenn St was burned on the back and left side when a mattress caught fire early today. Fire Chief F C Sanders said he may have fallen asleep while smoking and was carried outside by friends to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Damage was about 40 dollars.
Joe Krieger of Tulsa led the final round of the 1961 world series of sport fishing at Grand Lake with 128.23 points after 74.14 points from 10 bass and a catfish. Harold Ensley of Kansas City, defending champion, trailed at 92.83 after 13.17 points. Ken White of Independence, MO, fished the same boat and landed a 3.87 pound bass, the day’s largest.
Pope John XXII, much improved after a mild influenza, celebrated Mass in his private chapel marking the third anniversary of his election. Vatican sources said he has no fever and is nearing full recovery.
A historic 1880s residence at 1409 Tennessee Street north of the Beta Theta Pi house was demolished. Built by local contractor R. W. Sparr and long home to the Sparr family, the property will join Beta’s facilities under a Beta alumnus ownership. No plans yet beyond potential parking and tennis courts. John Falletta says actives and alumni will decide its future.
Newport Chief Upshore White and two detectives, plus three others, stand indicted on charges they conspired to arrest George Ratterman in a hotel room with a stripper last May 9 though they knew he was innocent. The case ties vice and corruption to Campbell County law enforcement.
UAW faced a Thursday strike deadline at Chrysler Corp as talks continued. The union signaled it would seek to avoid a walkout, but the international board postponed a final decision on serving 48-hour strike notice until 8 p.m. Tuesday.
An 18 year old woman, Fanie Mae Best, suffered minor bruises Friday after her car collided with another driven by 58 year old William D. Paden at the 100 block of West Sixth Street. George E. Person, 25, and 58 year old Paden were involved. Damages totaled about 350 dollars.

Police probe the death of 19 year old Betty Gail Brown, a Transylvania University student from Lexington. Detectives report no motive or robbery, with 19 investigators, autopsy showing probable strangulation, and a witness placing the victim with a male date near midnight.
Bobby Dan Sharp, 16, was sentenced to up to 10 years in the state reformatory at Hutchinson for his role in a gang assault at a Rosedale Park baseball game on June 29. He pled guilty to assault with intent to kill and to a separate crime against nature. The terms run consecutively.
Kansas Power & Light Company reports profits up slightly for the three months ended Sept 30 with a quarterly net of 1,900,000 versus 1,863,000 a year earlier. For the full year, net profits fell to 7,583,000 from 7,840,000, while annual sales rose to 57,975,000.

Dr Elmer Ellis president of Missouri University will address the Lawrence Rotary Club on Monday. Ellis became MU president in 1955 and will discuss Higher Education in the Missouri River Valley. He holds a BA and MA from North Dakota University and a PhD from the University of Iowa.
