Washington reports heavy losses for Japanese on Guadalcanal as land and sea actions continue. Destroyers sunk and a battleship damaged amid fierce fighting near Henderson airfield with air support and naval patrols.
Liberty Memorial High School students, teachers, and staff contributed 78 685 pounds of scrap metal for the war effort. Government class led by Mrs. Buehler topped with 37 629 pounds averaging over 500 pounds per student, while civics and physics class challenges produced notable totals.
Soviet dispatches describe a strategic hill recaptured on the Black Sea coast near the western Caucasus and German retreats northeast of Luapsee. Red Star reports the Reds stormed the peak wiping out riflemen with grenades. Stalingrad defenses faced fresh Nazi assaults, with heavy losses for the Germans but some advance into the Red October area. Soviet gunners repelled waves, destroying tanks, blockhouses and trucks. Northwest of the city, forces near a recaptured village in the Volga Don corridor killed dozens of Axis troops and repelled multiple attacks in two hours.

Topeka officials accuse federal liquor shipments to officer clubs at Camp Funston Fort Riley and Salina air field of violating liquor laws. P R E Farley denounces governor Burke as part of a national Democratic administration while detailing 17 shipments from July 15 to Oct 21 1942 totaling 1725 cases 41000 pints and a further 225 cases 5400 pints on Oct 21. He says seals remained intact until reaching federal territory and demands Burke be informed of the affront to Kansas sovereignty.
Ernest Peter Burger testifies in federal court that he and seven other Nazi saboteurs landed in the United States from submarines last June with about $153000 in cash to finance their mission of destruction. He says each saboteur received $5000 in American currency and a $50 pen probe. The leaders of two four-man groups had operating funds between $50000 and $50000. Six saboteurs were executed in Washington, D.C., August 8. The trial involves three Chicago couples charged with treason.
Cincinnati workers estimate 1500 strikers from City Employes United Construction Workers walkout over a 25 percent wage claim. 300 pickets at city hall, 100 at waterworks plants, as City Manager Sherrill warns of possible water supply disruption and orders suspension of street cleaning, highway maintenance, and waste collection.
London reports that Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt see MS column was censored in Britain for mentioning a banned place. The censorship office attempted to notify her via the U S embassy but she was traveling too fast to be reached. the column was sent to the United States as instructed if unavailable.
Overland Park Kansas marks Navy Day with a citywide scrap drive. Businesses shut for the morning as residents and workers collected 85 tons of scrap metal to aid the war effort.
Judge Hugh Means announced this morning that jurors will be summoned for duty on November 16 instead of November 9 as originally scheduled. The November term of court opens next Monday.
British, American, and Allied forces press the North Africa front as armored clashes surge along Rommel's axis line. U S pilots tally seven of 18 axis planes shot down. Lieut Lyman Middleditch earns three victories. Allied air power targets Rommel’s positions while tanks move to break the northern flank near El Alamein.

An OPC official said the War Production Board allocated 224000 tons of steel to finish the Texas to Philadelphia New York oil pipeline system. The 850 mile extension from Norris City Illinois to the region will cost about 60000000 dollars and be done next spring or summer. The first 580 mile Texas to Norris City link should be finished in December and will move 300000 barrels daily for rail barge and truck transit to the eastern shortage area. The extension will deliver the 300000 barrels daily directly to Bayonne New Jersey refining area.
War bond buying is planned between halves of the Kansas Nebraska football game with Homecoming festivities. Governors Ratner and Griswold will preside at halftime as a bond payoff and a $25 bond is awarded to the winning state. An auction between halves will award the Governor’s bond to the largest purchaser.
Wet weather moved into Kansas scattering light showers across the western area. The forecast predicts rain will spread east tonight covering most of the state with temperatures dipping slightly but no freezing expected except possibly in the northwest. No rainfall measured yesterday. Ellis reached 76 degrees, Goodland dropped to 41, and a light snow lay in Wyoming with subzero readings in Minnesota.
County treasurer says truck license tag demand tied to Sunflower Ordnance plant. Despite travel limits, truck tags sold 39 this year, down from 1,632 by this date last year. car tags total 7,405 vs 7,766 last year. Some counties run 50 percent behind.
A State OPA representative will lead a Saturday training session for Douglas County gasoline and tire rationing. Attendees include gasoline dealers, board members, clerks, school authorities, and volunteers. Registration by P T A workers is set for November 9 to 11 at local grade schools.
Douglas County Kansas defeated Douglas County Nebraska by a 3 to 2 margin in a scrap collection contest that closed last Saturday. Kansas averaged 159.64 pounds per person vs Nebraska’s 109. 2018 tons were gathered in six weeks plus two prior months. Gov Griswold will attend the Kansas game to pay a $25 war bond bet to Gov Ratner.
The RH President Roosevelt and the war council surveyed conditions in the Southwest Pacific and Middle East. A White House meeting occurred today and Walter Nash, New Zealand's representative, said the emphasis was realism rather than optimism.
In New York on October 28 representatives of bituminous coal operators and miners in the northern Appalachian region agreed in principle to a six day week to raise production from 550000 to 600000 tons next year. The plan, requested by Secretary Ickes, was announced by Ezra van Horn and Thomas Kennedy after a preliminary conference. Kennedy said the union desires time and a half for the extra work. van Horn noted technical problems remain.
Three KU graduates Don B Cole James R Lee and John W Martin all of Lawrence were among 45 Flying Jayhawks in the U S Navy Pre Flight school at St Marys California who were graduated October 28 and assigned to a naval reserve base for primary flight training The squadron organized by the Kansas City Naval Aviation Cadet Selection Board was the largest university group at the school and members will receive commissions as Naval Reserve Lieut or Marine Corps Reserve second lieutenant.
Douglas County Milk Producers association met at the courthouse to press for 70 cents per pound of butterfat for Lawrence grade A milk, arguing current 67 and a half cents rate makes production unprofitable. Large turnout showed 85 percent of Lawrence grade A milk representatives were present, with no petition yet submitted to the OPA in Dallas for a one cent per quart increase.
New Delhi reports Japanese raids on American airfields in northeast India destroyed or damaged at least 10 grounded fighters and several transports. The effort to smash U S bomber bases to China is seen as futile. Lieutenant Edward M Nollmeyer of Everett Washington is noted for shooting down one enemy fighter single handedly during the attack.
Charles F. Reed of Topeka is named federal rent director for Shawnee Douglas and Franklin counties. An OPA release says the Topeka office will supervise rent controls with a Lawrence sub‑office opening November 2 at 726 Massachusetts Street. Rent levels revert to March 1 1942, and staff will be drawn from local civil service pools. Pliny Castanien of the Office of War Information will join Lawrence events.

An army board in Long Beach announces a mid air collision caused the crash of an American airliner on October 23. Second Lt. W N Wilson of West Los Angeles and Staff Sgt. Robert P Leicht of Beaumont Texas are under arrest with Wilson charged with manslaughter.
Washington reports William L Batt of the combined raw materials board announced that within 48 hours of British arrival in Antananarivo the board arranged a shipment of 10 000 tons of Madagascar graphite to the United States for vital use.
