Congress Near Deal to Avert Budget Crisis
Congressional leaders and the White House announced a tentative pact to suspend the debt ceiling until March 2017 and fund the government for two years. The plan would raise overall spending limits by about 520 billion for defense and 493 billion for nondefense, with additions in the first two years, and include protections for seniors against Medicare premium increases and long term Social Security savings. Boehner plans to retire, with Rep. Paul Ryan likely to succeed him, as Republicans weigh the deal amid questions on details and potential passage.
