Blaze swept across Southern California fanned by fierce Santa Ana winds torching dozens of homes and thousands of acres. The day saw rapid spread and urgent firefighting efforts across multiple counties as residents evacuated and authorities warned of ongoing threats.
June Tsiokas, Adele A. Gaboury, and others describe a resident who remained in her house unseen for four years until her death was finally discovered, leaving neighbors and authorities to untangle how no one noticed for so long.

Haskell Indian Nations University urges Douglas County to reroute or halt the 31st Street trafficway until seven concerns are addressed. The county failed to notify Haskell during discussions on trafficway environmental impacts and did not officially inform about the wetlands filling permit. The board seeks to reopen public comment. Haskell requests an environmental study include wetlands north of 31st Street, citing disruption to sweat lodges and the Medicine Wheel Earth Art from traffic noise.
In Finney County a tuberculosis outbreak concerns health officials with 33 active cases including nine new infections in two weeks. County health administrator Marilyn Peterson calls it an emergency as 12 adults and 21 children are affected while confirmations lag four to six weeks.
Mayor John Nalbandian announced Halloween as Saturday night and Sunday for the city with official trick or treat from 6 30 p m to 8 30 p m on October 31 He urged porch lights on and safe behavior for costumed youth and parents to walk familiar neighborhoods He noted downtown events start Saturday with a parade at Sixth and New Hampshire and Massachusetts Street trick or treating from 5 30 to 6 30 p m Sunflower Cablevision will host a Toys for Tots drive with hot dogs drinks and coffee from 5 to 7 p m outside 644 N Hampshire Street
Lawrence man Chad Beers, 24, arrested at a Greyhound station in Corpus Christi ending a three week manhunt. Beers escaped from a Douglas County officer on Oct. 5 after a Checkers Foods robbery on Oct. 1 and was sought for armed robbery and kidnapping. He faces options for extradition to Arkansas for federal kidnapping charges or back to Douglas County for armed robbery proceedings.
Suspected kidnapper and robber Chad Beers aged 24 from Lawrence was captured in Corpus Christi Texas after 21 days on the run. He escaped a sheriff’s transport on Oct 5, was arrested Oct 1 in an armed robbery case, and was linked to a Sept 24 Arkansas kidnapping. A tip from America’s Most Wanted led officers to arrest accomplice Jonathan Kliem in Hays on Thursday.
President Clinton released a retooled 1300 page health care reform proposal. The plan abandons universal coverage as a goal and imposes limits on federal subsidies for small businesses and low wage workers. Clinton and Hillary delivered the bill to lawmakers in Statuary Hall with a pledge to preserve patient choice.
