East Lawrence residents seek halt on Haskell Loop project

A group named East Lawrence Citizens for Housing Preservation seeks to suspend federal funding for a $2.5 million two lane roadway linking 11th and Haskell to Seventh and Connecticut. The protesters say the loop harms minority residents and misuses Community Development funds while HUD reviews the plan and local hearings are scheduled.

Death of Randall Millikan prompts autopsy and lab tests

Authorities await tissue analyses from the Kansas State Health Laboratory to determine the cause of death of 21 year old Randall L. Millikan of 829 Ind. The Kansas University student was found in his bed by neighbor Robert Skaggs II after missing work all weekend. An autopsy was performed and officials expect days for results. Funeral services are set for Memorial Park Cemetery with memorials to Plymouth Congregational Church.

Farm-City Mixer draws 90 reservations to date

Lawrence Chamber of Commerce reports more than 96 farmers and businessmen have booked for the second Farm City Mixer on November 5. A noon luncheon in Building 21 at the fairgrounds and a speech by Bill May of the Federal Land Bank of Wichita are planned.

Meningitis Cases Reported at Haskell Day Care Center

Three cases of homophilus meningitis were reported in the past month among children under one at the Haskell Indian Junior College day care Little Indian Center. A CDC physician arrived to investigate and test to assess any spread among 65 other children. The illness is common in infancy but not typically epidemic.

Fleming reports increased sales across a strong period

Fleming Companies reports 12 week sales of 417.2 million ending Oct 2, up 6.1 percent from 1975. Net earnings reach 2.9 million or 47 cents a share, up 7.4 percent. For the 40 weeks ending Oct 2, sales total 1.37 billion, up 19.5 percent, with earnings of 9.5 million or 1.53 per share versus 8.5 million or 1.38 last year.

Mayor to veto zoning code over mobile home provision

Lecompton Mayor Oscar Gowing said he will veto the city zoning code passed earlier this month citing a provision that restricts mobile homes to mobile home parks. He criticized the 60 page measure and noted the council may not override without a unanimous vote.
