The Lawrence Navy League observes Navy Day stressing the U S Navy’s role in countering world threats. Fred Bates notes the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Seventh in the Far East and the Second Fleet around Cuba. The remark lauds sailors and Marines and wishes them Godspeed in coming days.
Manley J. Hood of NASA Ames will lecture freshmen and interested upperclassmen at 11 30 a m Tuesday in Swarthout Recital Hall Murphy Hall on What We Are Learning From Space Hood has 30 plus years in aeronautics and space and helped establish Ames 16 foot High Speed Wind Tunnel The Hood family has long ties to KU with several graduates and a professor emeritus father in the Engineering School

The talk is Monday at 4 30 p m in Flint Hall Room 205 Brown formerly American news editor for the Monitor covering U S Latin America and has reported on Britain Western Europe the Caribbean and Asia including Formosa Burma Thailand India and Pakistan He also studied missiles electronics and nuclear weapons impacts on U S military branches.
Mrs. Vanderbilt Webb of New York chairs the American Craftsmen's Council and judged entries for the ninth annual Kansas Designer Craftsmen Show. She evaluated work from more than 100 Kansas and former Kansas artists, with the exhibit set to run in the Kansas Union from November 4 to December 1.

Three KU Air Force ROTC pilots Lt Col Gerald Hallas Maj Kenneth Shook and Capt Arthur Wagner have been on additional support flights from Forbes Air Force Base Topeka since the Cuban crisis began They typically fly about 10 hours a month but say they are doing a great deal more now carrying supplies to Forbes from depots National and international links are shown by a KU Natural History Museum publication receipt from Saitama University Library in Japan
Democratic senatorial candidate James B. Donovan spoke at Dalton Schools annual election assembly in New York. A 13 year old asked about the main issues, and Donovan criticized New York's representation by two Republican senators. The student turned out to be Josh Javits, son of his opponent Senator Jacob K. Javits.
Bruce Financier Edward Gilbert plans to return to the United States to face federal and state charges after fleeing to Brazil amid nearly $2 million in shortages at his firm. Gilbert, former president of E. L. Bruce Co., will surrender to authorities, with indictments charging misappropriation and use of the mails. He says funds were used to aid Bruce in gaining Celotex control, pledging collateral on Celotex stock. IRS liens exceed $3.4 million against him and his wife.
Lord Snowden, 32, husband of Princess Margaret, was admitted to the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London for a routine check due to a stomach complaint. A spokesman said he would be discharged either today or Sunday.
Khrushchev proposed a Cuba Turkey rocket trade as Kennedy refrains from direct reply. Salinger indicated no immediate White House comment. The United States demands an immediate halt to Cuban base work and rendering offensive weapons inoperable with international verification before any talks. The White House cited several inconsistent Soviet proposals and stressed removing the Cuban threat as the first step.
In Osage County the Overbrook annexation adds 21 acres with 50 total acres planned for development. Owners Glen Norton and five partners will build streets and install sewer and water next spring, selling lots for home construction this fall. Mayor Atchison supports the plan as city residents gain new buildable plots.
Foreign Secretary Lord Home warned the Soviet Union that continued missile base development in Cuba heightens the risk of war. He summoned Soviet Charge d'Affaires Vitalij A Loginov in London to deliver the warning.
