Teens Births in D C Drop Sharply to Record Lows

Washington illustrates a seven year decline in teen births with 15 to 17 year olds hitting a record low. The 1997 to 1998 decline includes a 5 percent drop for high school age girls 15 to 17, now 30.4 births per 1000 teens, reflecting reduced sexual activity and increased use of long acting birth control and condoms amid AIDS fears. The AMA also releases a dementia care guide for primary physicians to diagnose and prevent elder abuse as the population ages.

Last Liberty Tree cut down in Annapolis amid wind and decay

In Annapolis Maryland the 400 year old Liberty Tree on St Johns College campus was cut down after years of disease and hurricane damage. Governor Glendening called it a farewell to an old friend while college president Nelson mourned the loss. A ceremony featured wreaths, a tolling bell, and plans to clone DNA for future plantings.
