Battles raged along the border and in Belfast as British troops clashed with snipers. A gagged body found in an alleyway was identified as the 134th victim, with a second fatal shooting raising the toll to 135 in two years of bloodshed.
Downtown store windows will be painted for Halloween from 3 30 to 6 p m Thursday and Friday. Parks staff will inform applicants about window assignments and judging occurs Saturday morning. Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend at 2 a m Sunday, so people should set clocks back one hour. A bicycle auction will be at 9 a m November 13 at the Lawrence Police Station lawn. over 50 recovered bicycles will be sold to fund Fire and Police pensions.
A bust of former Wakarusa Valley School principal Mrs Veda Stanton and an oil painting of the school will be unveiled at 7 30 tonight during a ceremony at the school. The bust was created by Brian Lingle and the painting by Ruby Kampschroeder Wagner. The event follows a short Parent Teacher Organization meeting and will be presented to principal Russell Brooks by Lingle and Mrs Robert Flory.
Barbara J. Bussart pleaded guilty to embezzling 24000 dollars from the Kansas State University Endowment Fund. Charges against her husband Dale Bussart were dismissed. A pre sentence investigation was ordered and sentencing set for November 5 by Judge Lewis MecLaughlan in Riley County.
Hospital officials explain why advance payment may be required for abortions under the new law. They cite scarce insurance coverage, false addresses, and collection difficulties as reasons for the policy. In the first year LMH performed 250 abortions, with most patients from nearby Douglas County.

A $112 382 contract for the construction of a perimeter road at Haskell Indian Junior College has been awarded to Constant Construction Co of Lawrence Kansas by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Senator James Pearson and Congressman Larry Winn. The road will run at the east edge of the campus and lead to planned printing and graphics arts and electronics buildings.

Sumner High School will close the march.

Testimony began around 10:30 a.m. in a Douglas County District Court jury trial for Wallace K. Jones 24 of Wichita. He is charged with attempted sale of heroin and has remained jailed with a $100,000 bond since his July 29 arrest in Wichita.
