Unions Ordered to Oust Leaders or Face Suspension

The AFL CIO executive council demanded the UTW Bakery Workers and Teamsters oust officials accused of corruption or face expulsion at the December convention. UTW president Anthony Valente and Bakery Workers president James Cross were targeted, with plans to remove treasurers and reshuffle leadership. The Teamsters were already suspended pending removal of James Hoffa and others.

Private Bus Firms Seek Legislative Help in Kansas

Four privately owned city bus companies led by Merritt Wimaley of Wichita and Lawrence told a Kansas Legislative Council committee they face operating losses and want relief. They asked to cut state fuel taxes and use school funds to cover fare differences. Hunt For Local Man Body In Kaw River Rescue Search

Searchers continued on the third day for Larry Leon Sawyer missing after he drowned Thursday in the Kaw River near Bowes Dam. Sawyer rode in a boat with John R. Layman who was rescued by firemen after being stranded on driftwood at the Bowes Dam bridge. The craft was recovered Friday.

Topeka Man Sentenced in Fatal Highway Crash

John Ivan Mollett of Topeka received a sentence of 900 dollars on a negligent homicide charge after his station wagon crashed while trying to pass near Lawrence on U S 40. The victim was Henry Mollett, his father, and two others were injured. Mollett also fined 100 dollars for driving without a license. a driving while intoxicated charge was dismissed.

Lawrence Woman Held After Husband Shooting

A 39 year old Lawrence woman, Mrs Johnnie Washington, shot and killed her husband George with nine shots from a .22 revolver. She is held without bond on a first degree murder charge in county jail. Preliminary hearing set for Monday morning. Washington had previously killed his first wife in 1946 and claimed he forced the marriage six weeks ago with threats to kill her.
