Houston mayoral candidate Louie Welch triggered a live on air controversy when he suggested shooting the queers as part of a plan to combat AIDS. The remark occurred during a discussion on KTRK-TV with a reporter later to appear on the program, and Welch dismissed it as horsing around.
Ciba Geigy Corp and four Toms River plant officials were indicted on 35 counts for illegally dumping more than 55000 drums of hazardous waste in landfills and a wastewater system that leads to the Atlantic Ocean over a decade. Prosecutors warn of up to 23 million dollars in fines if convicted.
