Lawrence to Await HUD OK for 2 Elderly Housing Projects
Two Lawrence housing projects approved in August by HUD await final approval. Vermont Towers at 11th and Vermont and Melrose at Melrose and 24th Street Terrace will receive Section Eight rent subsidies to back private financing. Construction is planned for spring with completion about a year later for Vermont Towers and a December planning appearance sought for Melrose with 90 one bedroom units and 10 upgraded units.

Wellsville School Board approved two changes to high school graduation rules. Students must complete a second math unit or a business course and English requirements now mandate English 1 2 and 3 for grads after 1979. The board also discussed but did not act on competency standards and kept the special education cooperative with Eudora. Liquor burglary suspects sought in Lawrence
Two Indian men are sought after a Monday night burglary at Lobb’s Retail Liquor, 1806 Mass. Lawrence police say they broke a store window with a rock, stole liquor bottles, then fled on foot. Loss estimated at 350 dollars. Officers found broken bottles near the scene but did not locate suspects. The Agriculture Industry Tour sponsored by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and Douglas County Extension Service was cancelled after reservations filled only half the tour bus.
