William L. Rogers deputy assistant secretary for Indian Affairs urged stronger self-government better education and more economic help for American Indians at the United Indian Tribes meeting at Haskell Indian Junior College. Kansas and Oklahoma lawmakers spoke on legislation and unity aiding tribal progress.
A series of talks at Kansas University features AP correspondent John Roderick in Woodruff Auditorium on The China Nixon Will See. Kenneth Stampp of UC Berkeley, Philip Hauser of the Population Research Center, Lt. Gov. Reynolds Shultz, and Angus Wilson are also scheduled for sessions in Woodruff, Murphy Hall, and the Kansas Union.
In TsU Japan two express passenger trains collided head on in a single track tunnel killing 13 and injuring 188. Police and railway workers searched wreckage seven hours after the crash at 4 p.m. The trains carried 520 passengers and all victims were Japanese. Officials blamed the tunnel collision on both trains entering simultaneously.
Early returns for the Lawrence United Fund drive show pledges totaling 14412.74 as of now, under the 150055 goal set for Oct 29. Drive chairman Keith Lawton urged volunteers to intensify efforts, stressing the need for at least a 10 percent increase over last year.
Lawrence announces weekly bulk trash collection for section five north of the river with curbside placement for Wednesday. Kansas City resident Harry A. MacNeive, 55, injured in a two vehicle crash October 18, remains in fairly good condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after his brother Theodore M. McNeive, 67, of Topeka, was killed. Veterans Day ceremonies at Strong Hall honor war dead since 1917, hosted by Vietnam Veterans Against the War.
Two robberies occurred Saturday night on the Kansas University campus involving three students who were jumped near Memorial Stadium. Freshmen Robert McArtor Don O'Brien and sophomore Andy Rush reported beatings and loss of billfolds, while five residents said Steve Holm was attacked near Learned Hall with facial injuries.
Laurence Chalmers of Kansas University joins the fall meetings of the Association of American Universities in Washington this week. He travels to New York on Thursday for an alumni event and returns to participate in a panel for the Council for Basic Education before flying back to Lawrence.

A Douglas County Master Road and Street Plan, costing several thousand dollars, awaits county commission approval after a planning commission hearing at 7 30 p m Tuesday in Lawrence. The plan would set aside land for 80 miles of road and block permits that conflict with the master plan, drawing opposition from commissioners and state highway officials who call the proposed right of way premature and based on unapproved federal and state routes. Short defends adoption as essential for timely development, while restudies and spring review are urged by the highway department.
The Douglas County Master Street and Road Plan envisions three four lane freeways. A southern leg would run from Haskell Ave south to the county line parallel to U.S. 59. Two loop freeways would encircle Lawrence starting near K-10 and linking to U.S. 24 toward Topeka. Clinton Lake would be ringed by county and state roads including Clinton Parkway on 23rd Street, with 28th Street extended.
Nearly 6,000 high school musicians twirlers and majorettes are slated for Kansas University's 26th annual Band Day. A limit of 80 bands exists on a first come basis, with late applications turned away. The march begins at 9 a.m. from Central Park down Massachusetts Street to South Park, then a halftime performance at Memorial Stadium for the KU Oklahoma State game.
Lawrence police report a Kansas University student, Larry C. White, 19, was tossed over a car after a motorcycle and a car collided at Ninth and Indiana. White is in quite good condition with multiple fractures of an arm at Watkins Memorial Hospital. The car, driven by Lauren J. Luxmore, 22, was eastbound and turning left. the motorcycle was westbound. Damage was $800 to the motorcycle and $500 to the car. Four minor collisions were also investigated over the weekend.
