Allied forces push toward Sparanise and Isernia threatening the Massico ridge as Fifth and Eighth Armies advance in Italy. In Washington, Senator Vandenberg backs Connally postwar aims while urging patience on detailed world security plans.
Allied and Australian troops repelled four Japanese attacks near Finschhafen as bombers and fighters struck back. MacArthur’s headquarters called the enemy weak and isolated, with supply routes to the north difficult. Allied air forces claimed numerous enemy ships and aircraft destroyed in New Guinea theater.
The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce will host a Navy Day luncheon Wednesday at 12:20 PM in the Hotel Eldridge. Clifford Dean, chair, says Prof. E. C. Buehler leads the program with Ensign James E. Wilson as main speaker.
Mrs Clyde Burns of near Clinton received word from her mother in California that her brother Staff Sergeant Joe Mansfield Mansfield of Muskogee Oklahoma is missing in action. He served as a tail gunner on a bomber based in England and had visited there often. He went overseas about three months ago after being stationed at the Topeka air base.
At noon today the War Fund Community Chest total in Douglas county stood at $28,638, only $979 short of the $29,617 quota. Campaign officials hope to go over the top tomorrow and wind up the solicitations in the county. Workers are confident the quota will be met with efforts and contributions from everyone.
About 200 Kansas University alumni are expected at a Los Angeles gathering on October 27. Alumni secretary Fred Ellsworth announced the annual meeting and that attendees will attend the play The Drunkard, a LA staple running for over a decade.
Soviet forces under Generals Malinovsky and Konev captured Dnepropetrovsk and Dneprodzerzhinsk as part of a wide offensive along the Dnieper bend. German defenses stiffened near Krivoi Rog and Melitopol while bridgeheads across the river raised alarms of a potential encirclement.
Moscow October 25 AP report notes Marshal Stalin received Cordell Hull as the tripartite talks among United States Britain and Soviet Union entered its seventh day. Hull is the highest ranking U S official to visit the Soviet Union and discussions followed talks with Anthony Eden. A new U S military mission led by Maj Gen John R Deane was set up to boost cooperation with Russian forces and coordinate lend lease and other aid.
The Community building event reveals 17 838 No 4 books issued to Lawrence residents and outsiders. Officials note the figure inflates city population and includes students away from home. Registration in townships not yet compiled. Lawrence deadline past with books unavailable until November 1 or later.
The Japanese two man sub, captured at Pearl Harbor, arrived in Lawrence this afternoon at 2 36 with a state highway patrol escort. It traveled from Kansas City and stood on west Eighth street in front of the WREN building with four booths set for war bond and stamp sales. Admission was 25 cents for grade schoolers, 50 cents for senior high students, and one dollar in war stamps for adults. Chief Clarence Bliesaper supervised roughly fifteen State Guard members directing traffic.
London dispatch says Tito partisans clashed with Mihailovic forces in Montenegro with heavy fighting around Matesevo and Mont Cakor as Chetniks allegedly joined German troops. Earlier communiques claimed partisan attacks in western Bosnia, with 2000 Nazi officers captured and 200 killed. Tito accuses Mihailovic of aiding the Germans. Bulgarians reportedly move troops into Yugoslavia under German pressure.
The Supreme Court agreed to review a decision holding that insurance companies are not subject to prosecution under the Sherman Antitrust Act. The action signals a possible shift in enforcement stance for major insurers.
The Kansas Color Press Machine company, converted from a rotary press plant to a machine shop, receives the Army Navy E. smallest firm by employees in 18-state Midwest district. The honor, announced in Washington by Undersecretaries Patterson and Forrestal, includes a flag and lapel pins to employees.

Marie Wilkins soprano presents the program with Joseph Wilkins assisting in an operatic duet from Rigoletto. Season, general, and student tickets are on sale at the east and west windows with special half price service men tickets.
Miss Jesse Roy of Hartford Connecticut will reign as Navy Day Queen at Douglas County events. Attendants Shirley Otter of Kansas City Missouri and Joyce Shook of Hutchinson were chosen with Roy by a committee of naval officers.
