London reports Anthony Eden efforts to broker a compromise amid a gloomy outlook for European non intervention in Spain. Incidents in the Mediterranean and pressures from France and Italy threaten to derail talks as Moscow’s stance looms over the session.
A seaplane of unidentified nationality bombed and machine gunned a French submarine chaser near Minorca in the Mediterranean setting it aflame. Airfrance officials said the craft flew away to its regular station in Fornells and the crew landed. The fire remained uncontrollable and the Maltese cross insignia drew police scrutiny.

Gleason known as Colonel Lafe a longtime Republican operative and secretary of the New York state committee died Sunday at St Luke's hospital He announced roll calls nominating seven presidential candidates and was a fixture at national and state conventions for three decades The 74 year old political veteran passed after a lifetime devoted to the party.
The Rev Charles E Coughlin will write no more articles for Social Justice until it is determined whether he can speak his own mind. Walter Buertschi of Toledo announced the pause as editor yesterday in Detroit reporting Oct 25.
Gov. Walter A. Huxman urged Kansans to cooperate fully with the federal unemployment census. He noted mail blanks will be distributed November 16 and 17 and returned by midnight November 20 without postage. He said accurate data on unemployment extent and geographic distribution are essential for a national plan.
An explosion and fire swept a school yard as a rotary drill derrick near Northeast High caused burns to two workmen and injuries to a foreman, while 500 pupils fled the scene. Fire inspector noted missing exhaust pipe on the truck operating the drill. The building sustained only smoke damage.
New York reports a sudden buying surge after an earlier market washout. Prices soared as traders bid shares up five to ten dollars from early lows while steel production forecasts narrowed, with the American Iron and Steel Institute placing current capacity at about 52.1 percent. A late wave of purchases again lifted numerous issues to intraday highs.
Washington reports that J. F. T. O'Connor the comptroller of the currency has asked ten employees to resign to cut costs. Workers have until January 1 to find new jobs and O'Connor is helping them seek work with other government agencies. Among those dismissed is William V. O'Connor nephew of the comptroller and attorney. Also let go is C. H. Kit Williams son of the late Senator John Sharp Williams.
The first session of the American Federation of Labor C I O peace conference recessed today with preliminaries still under discussion. George M. Harrison, chairman of the A F L committee, said committees had spent the morning outlining procedures for the conference.

Chinese armies under Chiang Kai-Shek halted the Japanese offensive after six days of heavy fighting near Shanghai. Japanese officials claimed momentum slowed. 1,000 Japanese casualties reported and 15,000 reinforcements landed. Mines and bombardments disrupted bridges and roads around Kiangnan and Tazang as both sides prepared for a possible renewed push.
The treasury reported a gross deficit of 509,487,311 dollars for October 22. In a budget revision, President Roosevelt forecast a gross deficit of 895,245,000 dollars by June 30, the end of the fiscal year.
At yesterday morning’s meeting the men’s forum class discussed the need for better enforcement of law, especially the prohibitory law in Kansas. Speaker W. C. Simons led the discussion and the class adopted a resolution urging more effective enforcement of the law.

The Public Works Administration announces completion of a shift from state to regional organization. Regional directors including George M. In New York on October 25 Maj. Charles Spencer Hart announces Elks lodges in about 1,400 U S cities will campaign to curb traffic ticket fixing. He says to mobilize half a million members to urge officials and allied groups to reduce the traffic toll of about 87,800 deaths and 1,300,000 injuries annually.
In Los Angeles gunmen from Pi-Gangster shot and killed night-club operator George Les Bruneman and bystander Frank Greuzard after midnight in a Shanty beer parlor. Nurse Alice Ingram, 24, was wounded in both legs while tending Bruneman. Bruneman had survived a July attack.
Topeka Oct. 25 LPH W H Burke vice chairman of the state board of administration issued a prepared statement on the controversial Beloit girls industrial school sterilization issue saying the board has always maintained that a general sterilization program is unjustified.

Two suits for 20000 were filed by Frank W. Titterington Jr. and Samuel C. Masonbrink for the deaths of their wives in an August auto accident near Hays Kansas. Defendants Frank W. Titterington Sr. and Anna M. Titterington owned the car and carried liability insurance. Participants said there were no strained family relations over the matter.

A strong earthquake struck Hilo and surrounding volcanic regions at 5 43 a m triggering tremors across the area. Seismologists believe the quake originated near Mauna Loa and was felt across eastern Hawaii.

Washington October 25 Patterson one of nine Negroes in the Scottsboro case lost in the Supreme Court seeking to escape a 75 year prison term in Alabama for an alleged attack on a white woman. The court denied the petition with Justice Black absent from consideration. The court also announced it would review Duke Power Company and Alabama Power cases challenging public works loans and hydroelectric projects.
Topeka reports Indian summer continues with readings near 75 to 80 degrees across Kansas. Federal meteorologist D Flora notes Goodland highs around 82 and lows near 44 in the morning. Expect 75 degree highs and upper 40s tonight with no weekend rain and a likely 75s Tuesday.

Two people were killed in weekend auto accidents near Leavenworth Kansas. John Biczak age 23 died in a collision on highway 5 eight miles south of Leavenworth. Three companions were injured. Paul Barthel age 45 was injured fatally by a car driven by William Moore. Barthel died in a hospital yesterday. Moore said he was blinded by approaching car lights.
William C. Edwards a Kansas City engineer aged 57 died Sunday in Seattle. His father W C Edwards previously served as Kansas secretary of state from 1895 to 1897.
Dodge City Kansas October 25 Leonard Boyd president of the League of Kansas Municipalities says cities will press for a larger share of state gasoline tax funds to improve streets. John G Stutz reports 587 incorporated towns in Kansas plan big city services in 1938. Gov Walter A Haxman to address officials Tuesday night on city problems from the governor's office. Ford Kansas notes full slate of women elected for city offices last April with 100 percent attendance.
Neal Wherry inducted John Skie Eugene Stephenson and Kenneth Landes into Rotary. Stephenson heads a new University petroleum department and notes 1935 oil data including 18 000 new wells and Kansas averages. The party also discussed pipelines and national oil policy amid noted Kansas officials and a teachers banquet next Monday.
