French forces regain ground near Verdun as a sudden smash yields big gains near Douaumont. Reports indicate continued pressure on German lines with casualties on both sides and advancing troops securing strategic positions along the Somme sector.
French forces recount a major Verdun breakthrough as four columns capture Haudremont quarries Douaumont fort and surrounding guns near Vaux. German defenders at Douaumont killed or captured. fort Vaux remains in German hands. Balkan front and Somme actions noted with rain delaying operations.
Fox Timberlake paid eight dollars and forty cents after a police court hearing this morning for being drunk.
Berlin reports that French forces gained ground on the Verdutt front after an attack. Vulcan Pass in Transylvania has been captured by General Von Falkenhyn's army. Tehnevardo, crucial for rail links between the Black Sea and the Danube, fell this morning depriving Russians and Romanians of their last Dobrudja rail connection. The bridge over the Danube at Tehnevardo could allow invasion routes to Bucharest if Romanians cannot destroy it.
Washington October 24 bids opened for four battleships and 20 destroyers the largest navy order ever priced. Government projections rose against soaring structural materials with Bethlehem Steel led bids and demands for price adjustments with any material changes to be settled by the FTC.
The Maple Grove Drainage Board ditch and sewer, built to drain the old river bed north of North Lawrence, withstood yesterday's rain. Water ran full through the ditch and under railroad tracks, carrying out the water as it fell. Cave-ins and settlement occurred above the sewer, slowing traffic. Ground settled up to four feet in places. a night watchman warned traffic. Ground will be graded and leveled at once.
Berlin reports central powers tighten grip on Romania with Medjifie Rashove in Dobrudja and Predeal on the Transylvania border fallen in rapid campaign progress. Military men acknowledge odds of further moves but expect developments in due time.
The First Baptist Church conducts its annual roll call today with a noon dinner for elderly members who cannot attend tonight. The program begins at 7 30 PM and features music and brief talks on church history and activities.

Floods halted the flood commission's inspection trip today as rising waters forced road closures and delayed planned assessments. Officials limited travel and redirected crews to safer routes while safeguarding key infrastructure.
The Merchants and Farmers Association held a regular meeting in place of the postponed session to hear flood inspectors. Heavy rains delayed the tour, pushing it to December first. A joint lunch with the Farmers Institute is set for November 1, with a 25 cent plate. Memberships for W J Cummings Jr Al Ward and KF Hess were approved. A booster meeting will follow the election. The good roads committee will urge drag work and culvert repairs on Rhode Island Street before winter.
Lawrence residents flock to a bogus National Brokerage Exchange offer from Minneapolis promising a 1017 model silk-petticoat in exchange for ten cents in silver and five letters to friends. About five thousand letters daily flow to Minneapolis as authorities close in. One local woman hired a stenographer to craft the demanded letters.
Col. ad C. Little sent a lone distance telephone message to the Hughes club saying he cannot be in Lawrence Thursday night to address the Hurghes club. He promised to attend in Lawrence before the campaign closes, probably next week.
The University Concert Course presents Axel Skovgaard the Danish violinist with his company in Robinson Auditorium on Thursday evening November 2. The program features popular and well known music. A few season tickets remain unsold and will be available at the door. Single tickets are 75c and 50c depending on location.
The Kansas Lutheran Synod plans a 1917 observance marking the Reformation four hundredth anniversary. A press committee was appointed by the Synod president to publicize the church history and aims. The three members are Dr G S Murphy of St Joseph Missouri Dr Heffelbower Washburn College instructor and Revere R E Weissmiller of Kansas City Missouri.
Malow Spalding Pead W reports his mother Mrs Spalding has died peacefully at her daughter’s Salina home. She was eighty something, married sixty years ago to W Spalding who died four years ago, lived in Lawrence since 1877, and for ten years with daughter Mrs Elijah Mull in Salina. A Christian church member who attended Baptist services, she remained mentally and physically active and kept informed on current events. Five children survive: Mrs Frank Preshrey of New York, C D Spalding of New York, Guy Spalding of Neodesha, Mrs Allah Mull of Salina, and W EK Spalding of Lawrence. Funeral likely next Friday at Mrs Mull’s home.
With ducks returning from their summer haven local sportsmen race to secure licenses. Over 200 hunting licenses issued this year indicate a busy fall season as camps dot rivers and hunters seek prime blinds. The open season runs from September 15 to December 15 under national law, though state law extends longer, creating unsettled jurisdiction.
In San Francisco United States Army authorities announced a plan to hire two women to aid enlistments. Lieut. Col. John G. Gardner, retired, in charge of the local recruiting station, advertised that applicants must be attractive, intelligent and industrious. The program would pay $1 for each recruit, with an uptown store exhibit showing soldier life.
U S mail will be carried by aeroplane from Chicago to New York within the next few days. Victor Carson, named as the aerial mail carrier, arrived in Chicago and Postmaster Campbell will arrange the service and schedule the first flight.
About fifty boys attended the Boys Club meeting at the City Y M C A last night. Kenneth Lott, a senior at the University school of law, gave readings to the group. The next gathering will be for freshman members.
The Lawrence Choral Union scheduled its first concert of the year for December 5 in Fraser Hall chapel at the University. A large turnout despite bad weather supported a strong rehearsal last night, with program details to be announced later.
Socialist presidential candidate Allen N. Benson arrived in Oklahoma City and will speak on October 29 as part of his campaign tour. He is listed as entering the state today and will deliver a campaign address in Oklahoma City.
Five classes organized in Kansas City Kansas this fall under university professors. A sociology class led by Prof. M. C. Elmer is the latest to be formed.
Manhattan reports it will send about 1,500 students and townspeople to the Kansas football game in Lawrence Saturday. Manager W.O. Hamilton has word of the group and notes the number may shrink. About 4,000 ticket applications were received for the Missouri Kansas Thanksgiving game, though sales start November 6.
The junior class met at 12:30 yesterday to arrange a masquerade Halloween party at the manual training building Saturday night. The event replaces a previously planned wienie roast for tomorrow evening.
Marriage licenses were issued yesterday by the probate court to Robert Emerson of Clay Center Kansas and Eliza Holt of Lawrence. Also granted were licenses to F G Wiedemann and Emma Gauck both of Lawrence.
Chicago on October 25 an “honest burglar” broke into the garage of architect Frank D. Chase and took his car. He left a note and a nickel and five pennies in a chair stating the cost of the window he broke to gain entry.
The Watkins National Bank, purchaser for the city water bonds, delivered the bonds to the city clerk for signatures. The mayor, city clerk, county clerk, and state auditor must sign and register the bonds, with signing and registration to be completed as promptly as possible.
Weather forces cancellation of Republican meeting in Eudora as Walter L Payne and Mrs C J Woodford plan to rally Douglas county voters in Vinland tonight. Rev RL Ransom, Kansas City colored orator, to address North Lawrence on November 3 about campaign issues from a Republican viewpoint. Hughes Alliance special delayed with Topeka arrival shifting to Saturday morning, likely no Lawrence speaking program.
A Country Club meeting at Mrs. Clarence Griffis home on October 18 began with a welcome by president Mrs. Deay and roll by secretary Mrs. B. J. Holmes. Eleven members answered with salad receipts and officers were elected: Mrs. W. E. Lawson president, Mrs. M. L. Holeam vice president, Mrs. E. H. Smith secretary, Dorcas Tucker organist. Refreshments followed, hosted by Mrs. Clarence Schirek and Miss Mary Griffis, with guest Mrs. Will Sr. adjournment set for two weeks later hosted by Mrs. Lewis Tucker and Miss Doreas Tucker.
Professor A M Wilcox will speak at 80 oclock Thursday afternoon in Fraser Hall on Greece as a Factor in the European War. His address was postponed from last week and will be the second in a series by college faculty. Next month Peter Appelboom from Romance languages, formerly a Gutehnavi officer, will speak.
State school supervisor and inspector J A Shoemaker will visit Douglas County next Monday and Tuesday to examine rural schools for standardization. Douglas County currently has six standard schools, and County Superintendent C R Hawley says the state inspection may add several more to the list.

John H. Delph aged 63 died at his home 809 Garfield Avenue this afternoon. Funeral services will be held from the home at 2 36 tomorrow afternoon with Rev. F M Lesterman in charge. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
General Carranza announces his candidacy for the Mexican presidency in a wireless message received by General Trevino on October 25 at Chihuahua City. The message confirms Carranza’s bid as elections approach.
The funeral for Count Karl Stuergkh, the late Austrian premier, took place this evening at the Cathedral of St Stephens. The body will be moved to Halbrain, the premier’s former home, for burial in the family tomb.
