Dior Dies in Italy After Postwar Fashion Reign

Christian Dior, 52, king of the postwar fashion world, died of a heart attack while on holiday in Montecatini, Italy. He arrived a week earlier with four friends and dined with his chief assistant Mrs Raymonde Zennacker. Dior popularized the New Look with long skirts and reigned atop high fashion before his death, following similar demise of Jacques Fath two years earlier.

Tall Judge Is KC's Reader Conscience

A 16 year old circuit judge in Kansas City oversees 260 questionable publications as police seized 13 000 to 20 000 magazines and books in raids. The judge will rule if the material is obscene under Missouri law and may order destruction if found objectionable. La Traviata at EU Concert Course Opens Season

A large audience heard Verdi’s La Traviata in the EU Concert Course opener. Dolores Wilson sang Violetta with sparkle and sympathetic characterization while Philip Macro and John Alexander offered strong hero roles. Jeannette Breval and others filled smaller parts well. George Schick conducted with quiet mastery. The production featured a large orchestra, refined chorus, attractive costumes, and effective interludes. A pair of flaws noted were the period setting shift to the Nineties and an English translation deemed unsuitable.
