Supreme Court declines appeal on contempt fines for reporting
The Supreme Court refused to hear two Baton Rouge newsmen over contempt fines for reporting a 1971 public hearing. Larry Dickinson of the Baton Rouge State Times and Gibbs Adams of the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate faced $300 fines each after reporting against a federal anti reporting ban. The case questioned whether authorities can enforce prior restraints via contempt rather than illegal content. Frank Stewart, a black civil rights worker, alleged political motivation behind state charges against him, including a 1970 indictment for conspiring to murder the Baton Rouge mayor.
